Meet Sgt. Terrell Alexander, a source of inspiration at the UCF Police Department. His story is one of determination, resilience, and a strong commitment to learning and growing, embodying what it means to be a lifelong Knight.

Before joining UCF, Sgt. Alexander worked at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, where he enjoyed his role but felt a growing desire for more education. Seeking both a chance to serve and opportunities for learning, he chose to become a part of the UCF Police Department.

As a double-knight, Sgt. Alexander achieved a rare feat, earning his undergraduate degree in Public Administration in 2018 and a master's in Management (PMSM) in Spring 2023. His journey, full of challenges, shaped him into the accomplished individual he is today. For Sgt. Alexander, UCF is more than just a workplace; it's a community that continually adds value and satisfaction to his professional journey.

In celebrating Sgt. Terrell Alexander's story, we celebrate not just his achievements but the spirit of a Knight who turns challenges into triumphs. His journey is an inspiration, reminding us that at UCF, we are part of a legacy, contributing to the positive growth and impact that defines the University of Central Florida. Cheers to being a Knight for Life!

From Alumnus to Professional

Gian-Karlo Alvarez, Human Resources Partner II and a proud double alumnus of UCF (Class of '11 and '21), recently shared insights into his remarkable career journey at the university. Starting as a student worker in 2008, recommended by his orientation leader, Gian-Karlo found his niche in student services while pursuing a degree in Management (HR). Reflecting on his initial post-graduation job search, he stumbled upon a role with Career Services that seamlessly blended his passion for supporting students with applying his HR expertise.

"I found a job with Career Services that surprisingly let me combine both my passions supporting students and applying my HR knowledge to support their work experience program. It was great finding out that UCF had a job that was perfect for me!" Gian-Karlo expressed.

Beyond the specific roles, Gian-Karlo highlighted the pervasive positivity at UCF. He firmly believes that every individual at the university is dedicated to the best interests of students and the community, contributing to a positive impact.

"Everyone is positive. I truly believe every person at UCF is doing the best job they can. We all want what’s best for students, what’s best for our community, and what will have a positive impact! As an HR person, I don’t get to work with students as often, but I know that my work directly impacts the success of the university and indirectly helps contribute to the success of our students," Gian-Karlo affirmed.

His journey at UCF spans 16 years, transitioning from a curious student worker to an established mid-career professional. Gian-Karlo attributes his growth to the support and encouragement he received from UCF leaders, promoting skill development, learning from others, and embracing new challenges.

"Benefits – our benefits are amazing! The health insurance options are tremendous, the amount of leave we get compared to private industry is huge (yay game day), and the retirement options are solid. They even paid for me to get my MBA while I worked full-time (tuition remission is great). Most people can’t even name a place that offers a pension and rewards dedication like UCF," Gian-Karlo praised.

He underlined the tangible impact of UCF's culture, emphasizing that being part of something bigger than oneself is both respected and valued in the community. Gian-Karlo spoke passionately about the diverse and impactful work at UCF, from lunar simulant to cutting-edge laser pulses and engineering marvels like the James Webb Space Telescope.

"I’ve got a million stories about how lives have been changed or impacted by the work that we do here. My life has been shaped profoundly by UCF. It’s a great place to find others and grow in the community," Gian-Karlo concluded, providing a compelling testament to the transformative journey one can embark on within the vibrant and impactful community at UCF.

A UCF Nursing Instructor's Perspective

Sotos G. Djiovanis, DMA, MSN, RN, ONC, an esteemed Nursing Practice Instructor at the University of Central Florida (UCF), shares his journey from UCF College of Nursing alumnus to a passionate faculty member, emphasizing the institution's commitment to excellence in nursing education.

"As an alumnus from the UCF College of Nursing, I had known how excellent of a nursing college it was, long before I came to study within it," Sotos expressed, highlighting the college's reputation for producing outstanding nursing graduates.

Beyond its acclaimed nursing programs, Sotos commended UCF for being exceptionally supportive of faculty development, education, certifications, research, and scholarly output. He emphasized that UCF creates an environment where both students and faculty can thrive.

"The best aspect of the job is the weekly teaching that I do with UCF nursing students. They are the best of the best, and I am very proud of them," Sotos shared, underlining the pride he takes in teaching and mentoring future RN colleagues.

UCF's global outreach also drew praise, with Sotos discussing the UCF Nursing in Mexico study abroad experience. "It is a true collaboration between UCF Abroad, UCF Nursing, and our UNACH partners in Latin America that is emblematic of the collaboration and synergies that are only possible at UCF," he highlighted, showcasing the university's commitment to fostering global perspectives in nursing education.

Describing UCF as "a university and an employer that is truly elite, without being elitist," Sotos highlighted the university's growth and inclusivity. "There are numerous resources and niches for all students, faculty, and staff. The university is growing in both size and stature. It is a great place to work and to learn," he concluded, encapsulating the sentiment that makes UCF a hub for both professional and personal growth in the field of nursing.

UCF Celebrates A "Not So Total Eclipse"

On Monday, April 8th, we all experienced the rare phenomenon of a solar eclipse. University of Central Florida (UCF) did not let the fact that we couldn’t see the full eclipse from our campus stop us from celebrating. Students and staff came to the reflecting pond where the Florida Space Institute presented 1500 solar eclipse glasses and 1000 complimentary totes for a “Not So Total Eclipse” event.  This event was sponsored by UCF Libraries, NASA Florida Space Consortium, UCF Department of Physics, UCF Office of Research and UCF Communications and Marketing. President Cartwright and Winston Schoenfeld, Interim VP for Research spoke at the event and researchers and colleges/departments had various stations set up around the pond to present their projects concerning the sun.  Knightro even joined in on the fun.

As the solar eclipse painted the sky, the UCF community embarked on a journey far beyond the stars. It wasn't just about witnessing an eclipse—it was about coming together, forging friendships, and making memories that would last a lifetime, all with a sprinkle of UCF magic!
This event highlighted UCF's secret sauce: a commitment to creating a community where everyone feels like they belong. Whether you're high-fiving colleagues in the hallway or sharing a laugh with the university president, every moment at UCF is a chance to be part of something bigger than yourself.

So why choose UCF? Well, besides our stellar academics and groundbreaking research, we're all about embracing the extraordinary moments that make life—and work—worthwhile. The solar eclipse experience at UCF isn't just about gazing at the sky; it's about embracing unity, fostering creativity, and making memories that shine brighter than any star in the galaxy.

So, fellow cosmic adventurers, come join us under the UCF umbrella, where every day is an adventure, every colleague is a friend, and every eclipse is an excuse to celebrate the magic of togetherness. After all, at UCF, the sky's not the limit—it's just the beginning of an incredible journey that's out of this world! 🌟🌒✨

Move It 4 May: A Friendly Competition

It’s that time of the year again at UCF! The Move it 4 May Steps Challenge has officially commenced, and the excitement is palpable throughout the corridors of the Office of Research (OR) and the College of Graduate Studies (CGS). This isn’t just any ordinary challenge; it’s a spirited rematch that has everyone buzzing with anticipation and a good way to support National Physical Fitness & Sports Month.

Previously, CGS emerged victorious, proving that size doesn’t dictate strength. Their triumph was a testament to their tenacity, and this year, they’re back to defend their title. But the OR team is not far behind, ready to step up their game and stride towards victory.

With over 100 participants, the competition is fierce, but the camaraderie is even stronger. Each week, the top three teams will be announced, fueling the friendly rivalry and pushing everyone to go the extra mile—quite literally!

The challenge kicked off with a series of events designed to energize and encourage participants. While attendance wasn’t mandatory, those who joined found themselves enjoying the fresh air, engaging in lively conversations, and embracing the spirit of the challenge. This is more than a competition; it’s an opportunity to connect with colleagues, embrace a healthier lifestyle, and enjoy the beautiful Florida sunshine.

As we watch OR and CGS team members lace up their sneakers and sync their step trackers, we’re reminded of the true essence of this challenge: it’s about taking a break from the daily grind, fostering employee engagement, and building a stronger, healthier UCF community.

We eagerly await the final tally to see which team will claim the top spot. But regardless of the outcome, every participant is a winner in our eyes. Their dedication to health, teamwork, and fun is what truly counts.

This post celebrates the spirit of the Move it 4 May Steps Challenge and the remarkable engagement it fosters among UCF’s employees. It’s a reminder that together, we can achieve more—whether that’s in research, education, or a step challenge. So, to all the challengers, we say: Good luck, and may the best team step forward! And remember, in the spirit of UCF, GO KNIGHTS and CHARGE ON!

Getting to Know Mike Harding

A Journey of Passion, Purpose, and Partnership

In our ongoing series to introduce the incredible team at UCF, we sat down with Mike Harding, the new Associate Vice President of Partnerships. Mike's story is one of bold moves, lifelong learning, and a deep commitment to making meaningful connections. Join us as we dive into his career journey, his motivation for joining UCF, and his vision for the future.

Mike Harding's career journey has been anything but conventional. Starting in finance at BNY Mellon, Mike quickly established himself in Middle Office Trading, where he honed his skills in client service under the guidance of an incredible mentor. His path, however, took an unexpected turn when he transitioned to academia.

"I took on a role in Campus Relations, overseeing the internship program for all of BNY Mellon, which led me to academia for the first time," Mike recalls. His move to Carnegie Mellon University to build out the Center for Business Engagement was a pivotal moment that set the stage for his future in higher education.

"The common thread in my career has been ‘try it’—never shying away from learning something new, and always connecting the dots on behalf of something bigger than myself."

One of the most significant decisions in Mike's career was leaving a stable position at BNY Mellon to join a newly formed department at Carnegie Mellon University. "That decision baffled my parents, and as a first-generation college student, I was nervous to leave a bank that had been good to me," Mike admits. But the leap paid off in ways he couldn't have imagined, giving him experiences that would shape his career and open doors he never expected.

Why UCF? A New Chapter in a Growing Story

When Mike was approached with the opportunity at UCF, neither Orlando nor the university was on his radar. However, the more he learned about UCF’s upward trajectory and Orlando’s emergence as a vibrant hub beyond its reputation as a tourist destination, the more intrigued he became.

"Reading about UCF’s story, its upward trajectory, and Orlando’s rise as more than just a tourist destination made me want to lean in and help a place on the rise reach its full potential," Mike explains. His passion for higher education and the black and gold colors that reminded him of home sealed the deal.

Mike is the first to acknowledge the challenges he's faced, particularly in dealing with leadership. "Having a good boss can really make or break an individual’s long-term success," he says. Yet, these challenges have only fueled his commitment to being a leader who inspires and motivates others.

Some of his most rewarding achievements reflect his adventurous spirit and commitment to creating impactful experiences—whether it was getting CMU students on a private jet for a corporate capstone project or establishing new international relationships that drove investment in his previous roles.

Although Mike is new to Orlando, having arrived in March 2024, he has quickly fallen in love with the city. "Such a welcoming, diverse community that still has its brightest days ahead," he says, embracing the sunny climate and the energy that defines both Orlando and UCF. "The energy is infectious and helps push through some of the growing pains that we will confidently overcome."

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Professionals

Mike’s advice for those considering a career change or stepping into uncharted territory is simple: "Just do it! You miss all the shots you don’t take." He emphasizes the importance of personal accountability and stepping out of one’s comfort zone.
Getting to Know the Inspiring Dean Mejia

From Industry to Academia: Getting to Know the Inspiring Dean Mejia of UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management.

Dean Mejia’s background reveals an inspiring career journey. Recently appointed as the permanent Dean of Rosen College of Hospitality Management in June 2024, Dean Mejia leveraged her extensive industry experience into a career in academia.

Her career in academia branched from her first career in the hospitality industry.

Her initial career began in 1983-84 as a cook in senior living, a role she undertook to fund her college education as she pursued a degree in Biochemistry at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. Shortly thereafter, she shifted her focus to culinary arts and moved to New York to attend the Culinary Institute of America. After completing their 2-year program and an internship, she returned to California and advanced within the Food & Beverage Operations sector in hotel industry roles. She even had the opportunity to move to Singapore for a year, where she took a prominent role as the opening chef for Blue, a restaurant and jazz club at the Shangri-La Hotel.

The demanding nature of the hospitality industry eventually led her to reconsider her career path. “Back then, we worked 12-hour days, 6-7 days a week,” she shares. “So, I decided to take a break.” She left to marry and start a family, only to realize her deep-seated passion for the industry. This led her to pursue an online master’s degree in hospitality from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. During her studies, she experienced numerous "aha" moments that highlighted gaps in her industry knowledge and inspired her to consider academia. This period of reflection also made her question why such knowledge was not more widely available to frontline and supervisory employees in the industry.

Dean Mejia began her teaching career at Le Cordon Bleu in Dallas, TX, where she found a rewarding balance between family life and professional involvement. This experience ignited her passion for teaching, which she later pursued at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX while earning a PhD in Hospitality Management. She shares that this is when she fell in love with teaching. Although she did train and mentor many while in the industry, being able to influence real change through the formal environment of the classroom really became her calling.

In 2013, she joined the University of Central Florida (UCF) as a research faculty member and Assistant Professor in the Department of Food Service, Lodging & Management. Her roles included teaching courses on Restaurant Operations, Facilities Management, Culture & Cuisine, and Foodservice Supply Chain. In 2019, she served as Interim Chair of the Department of Food Service & Lodging, a position she held for three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She was appointed Interim Dean in October 2023 and, after a national search, officially became the permanent Dean in June 2024.

How UCF influenced her to move to Florida.

Dean Mejia’s move to Florida was influenced by her dissertation research on the online adaptation of the hospitality and services industries and a compelling interview with Dr.Deborah Breiter at UCF.

“The industry embeddedness into Rosen College is unparalleled. There is no other place in the world like this. The more industry people I met, the more I saw how students were supported with scholarships and incredible jobs. Students come here from all over the United States because of that. I see the excitement for why they want to come here, and it makes me more committed to figure out how to get more scholarships for them and how to find better pathways for other students to come here. It also makes me excited about all the things we can do here at the college.” Her admiration for UCF’s approach to online learning and the unique industry integration at Rosen College led her to seize an opportunity to join the institution.

Career challenges when shifting from industry to academia.

Transitioning from industry to academia presented challenges. Dean Mejia notes that while industry roles demand immediate results, academia requires creating a supportive environment where mistakes are part of the learning process. This shift emphasized the need for a classroom culture that fosters trust and encourages learning from errors. “There needs to be a permission structure for mistakes, errors, [and] failures. Professors welcome mistakes and influence a desire for the students to learn from them—no matter where they are in their own learning journey.

Rewarding achievements and how changing her mindset shaped her career.

Throughout her career, Dean Mejia has found profound satisfaction in her ability to create change. “You can affect so much change in education,” she explains. “Not only can you directly influence students, but you also witness the ripple effect as they go on to create change themselves."

She attributes pivotal career moments to a willingness to take risks and adapt her mindset, influenced by the book Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers, Ph.D. “I’m a big risk-taker. If something’s a little bit scary, I’ll do it,” she says. Dean Mejia explains further how the book influenced her. “For most of my 20s and 30s, I struggled with acute anxiety,” she says. “I knew I was going to feel it—feel anxious, feel nervous—but I decided I’m just going to do it anyway."

Any advice for those aspiring to change or follow a similar career path?

For those aspiring to enter the hospitality industry, Dean Mejia advises exploring the sector’s diverse opportunities even beyond traditional roles, including marketing, human resources, and events, to name a few.

She also highlights the growing job prospects in Central Florida and the potential for careers in academia. Students can pursue degrees in lodging and restaurant management, hospitality management, entertainment and events management, or theme park and attraction management. For those already in the industry, there are also opportunities to explore instructor and faculty positions—several of which are currently available at UCF Rosen College.

Sharing her vision for the future of UCF Rosen College

One thing that COVID has shown us is that we must think about the future of teaching and learning in higher education. During the pandemic, a lot of people in the industry were furloughed or lost their jobs. As more time passes, and the economy starts to find its new normal, we can see a returning shift--just as Dean Mejia felt called back to the industry. “What we’re seeing, is that slowly, people are coming back to hospitality and tourism because they miss people! People do this work because they like people.”

Dean Mejia also shares that UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management is planning to undergo a multi-million dollar renovation within the next few years to embrace more in-person, face-to-face environments. She shares that this is a way to stay aligned with President Cartwright’s vision for UCF to be a technology and engineering metropolitan university. Dean Mejia is committed to innovating and exceeding expectations, ensuring the college remains a leader in hospitality education well into the future.

Five Minutes with a UCF Research Administrator

Erin Blackwell, left, says the master’s in research administration program helped her lead a growing team and integrate pre-award and post-award services while supporting faculty and research. (Photo credit: Blake Osting)

Erin Blackwell, MRA, Associate Director for the Research Administration Services Team in the College of Community Innovation and Education, credits UCF’s Master’s in Research Administration program for enhancing her career as a staff member.

When Blackwell started working at UCF’s Office of Research, she was introduced to the professional development pathways that were available to research administrators, including UCF’s MRA program offered online. As a lifelong Central Floridian with nearly 10 years of experience in research administration, she knew it was the right choice for her. Her journey soon began, and she graduated with a MRA in December 2017.

“I wanted to advance my career without having to move away,” Blackwell says. “The master’s program was a huge career boost, and I learned new skills that translate directly into the work I do here.”

Those skills proved essential when Blackwell was chosen to lead the college’s research office. “I had the opportunity to join the former College of Education who I was providing pre/post award support from the Office of Research,” Blackwell says. “It was an immediate yes.”

As the Associate Director of Research Administration Services Team, she has expanded her team from one member to six full-time staff and a graduate student. She also helped spearhead a unique initiative: combining the college-level offices that handled the pre-award and post-award sides of research administration.

When Blackwell transferred to COE, the office was mainly focused on pre-award services. “Typically, pre-award and post-award used to be handled in two separate offices, and we merged them,” Blackwell says. “This was not widespread at the time because other colleges provided post-award under their budget offices and pre-award was handled in close coordination with the Office of Research. We’ve been diligent about making our office a valuable resource for our faculty, and I think we’re a role model for how to successfully integrate pre-award and post-award in the same office.”

With the numerous opportunities afforded by her role to lead and grow, Blackwell has found UCF an encouraging place to work. She says this atmosphere is built on two things: strong leadership and unyielding employee support.

“At UCF, staff are just as valued as the faculty and the students,” Blackwell says. “It's great to be at a place that gives us support and resources so we can do our jobs effectively. Our college’s leadership has total confidence in us and allows us to do what we do best. It has always helped us grow in the ways we needed to grow.”

Blackwell sees that growth continuing and is thrilled for the future. She admires UCF’s priority on research and says things will only improve.

“The university is working to enhance its reputation in national research, and as research administrators, we’re a big part of that,” Blackwell says. “We're part of the team that is transforming everyday challenges into impactful solutions, and I’m excited to continue supporting our faculty and fostering collaboration to drive meaningful research initiatives."

A Day in the Life of Cindy Prophitt

A Day in the Life of Cindy Prophitt, Custodial Specialist III for UCF Facilities

College football season is officially underway, and while fans are excited to have fun with friends and family, tailgating, and cheering on the UCF Knights, it’s easy to overlook the dedicated facilities team working tirelessly behind the scenes. These unsung heroes ensure the campus is clean, often putting in long hours to maintain everything from the hallways to the restrooms. Cindy Prophitt, Custodial Specialist III for UCF Facilities, plays an important role in the daily operations of UCF for students, faculty, staff, and visitors alike. As everyone prepares for another game day, she shares a typical day at the university and gives insight into her role and what it’s like working at the different UCF campuses.

Starting her day with a plan!

“Every day is different to say the least,” says Cindy. She begins her day just as anyone would—she checks her emails, reviews work orders, delegates tasks amongst her team members, and even assists with coverage in areas that may be short-staffed.

In the Facilities department, Cindy ensures that her team has transportation, assesses their supply needs and listens to any concerns her team members may have. Next, she moves on to her team in the Education Building, and then checks in with the Student Union making sure she addresses any additional needs of each department. Sharing information as well as providing additional training is a vital part of her role at UCF.

Handling routine tasks, special projects, and maintenance requests that may occur.

To ensure her team has everything they need, supplies are ordered every other week and inventory is conducted regularly. “This is a crucial task because we need to be stocked at all times,” says Cindy.

If her team receives a work order, or one of her areas receives a project, she delegates and assigns tasks to the appropriate team members. Additionally, should extra support be needed, she assists in those areas to ensure each project is seen to completion. Her thorough communication and ability to collaborate are key factors in the success of facilities operations at UCF. “I am involved in planning, scheduling, and completing them. It takes teamwork and that is what gets results,” Cindy shares.

For building issues or customer requests, her team can submit work order requests on their behalf. “I can’t stress enough how it takes team work to complete small and large projects. Details and communication are everything when planning, scheduling, and completing projects.”

Sharing memorable experiences as a UCF Facilities employee.

Being a UCF Facilities employee means you get to meet so many people daily. Some of Cindy’s favorite memories include catching the “vending machine bandit,” rare opportunities like attending the “FLAPPA,” which is a conference of college and university professionals in the state of Florida at Valencia College, as well as being assigned to Lake Nona to guide employees until a new supervisor was appointed—whom she had to train as well.

When speaking to Cindy and hearing her experiences she’s had at the university, one thing really stood out—her memories with the students and visitors at the campus. “A thoughtful young lady organized a dinner for all the housekeepers on 2nd shift. This was [her] way of acknowledging everyone’s hard work and saying, ‘thank you.’ It’s been going on every year for the past three years. How awesome is that?” She still enjoys the many visits from people on campus to this day who approach her to share a memory they’ve had with her.

How has UCF supported you with your career aspirations and made you feel a part of something “more”?

Cindy started at UCF as a supervisor and continues her role in that position today. She’s had the opportunity to participate in many offerings the university provides such as workshops, safety courses, vendor demos, and even the self-defense courses offered by the UCF Police Department. Additionally, because of her high performance and inclination to go above and beyond her normal line of duties, like working at other campuses, she has received many rewards and commendable praises from her team. “When you get acknowledged for your hard work and efforts, it makes you want to do more. Even when it takes you out of your comfort zone, you realize you can do anything.”

Words of Wisdom for Future UCF Team Members

When asked what she would tell someone who may be interested in working at UCF, Cindy shared the following: “The benefits are awesome! Search the website and become familiar with the campus. The community is its own little town. There are a lot of terrific folks to work with and work for. Just like the students that attend classes here, they are working toward their dreams…do your best to succeed.”

UCF Shines with OnCon Icon 2024 Award

UCF Shines with OnCon Icon 2024 Top 50 Talent Acquisition Team Award

The University of Central Florida has proudly secured a spot on the prestigious OnCon Icon 2024 Top 50 Talent Acquisition Team list, marking a significant achievement in the realm of talent acquisition, community impact, and higher education. This recognition, determined through peer and community voting, highlights UCF's commitment to excellence in talent acquisition and recruitment strategies.

What makes this honor particularly noteworthy is that UCF stands alone as the only institution from higher education among a distinguished group that includes corporate giants like Disney, NBCUniversal, Marriott, Procter & Gamble, and PepsiCo. This recognition is not only a testament to UCF’s Talent Acquisition’s innovative approach and hard work, but also positions the university as a leader in a competitive landscape dominated by major corporations.

This accolade comes just two years after the reorganization of UCF’s Talent Acquisition unit, showcasing the effectiveness of the changes implemented from their industry experience, insight, and dedication to enhance recruitment processes and foster a more inclusive and efficient environment for potential employees.

Voted to the Top Amongst Peers

As mentioned earlier, this award is determined through peer voting, but not before the OnConferences team screens and nominates the candidates. The finalists selected by OnConferences are then made available for public voting. Voters are encouraged to consider several key factors, such as the impact the acquisition team has had on their organization, whether the team has exceeded expectations, and their contributions in areas like thought leadership and innovation, among others. The university’s ability to rise above the competition in such a short timeframe speaks volumes about the dedication and hard work of its team.

As UCF continues to build on this momentum, the OnCon Icon award serves as a testament to its vision for a brighter future in talent acquisition, one that is not only competitive but also committed to fostering diverse and dynamic workplaces. Congratulations to UCF and the Talent Acquisition team for this remarkable achievement!

Getting to Know Margot Winick: A Journey in Storytelling and Higher Education

At the University of Central Florida, we are fortunate to have dedicated and passionate professionals like Margot Winick, who brings decades of experience and an inspiring journey to our Central Communications & Marketing team. Today, we dive into her story, discovering what drives her and what she hopes to achieve at UCF.

A Love for Stories: From Early Beginnings to a Pulitzer-Winning Team

Margot’s passion for storytelling started early. "I always loved reading and writing and was a good grammar student," she shares, recalling how a recommendation from her honors English teacher led her to join her middle school newspaper. This was the start of a journey that would eventually take her to multimedia storytelling and broadcasting at the University of Miami.

One pivotal moment in her career came after she graduated from UM. She joined The Miami Herald just after Hurricane Andrew devastated the area. “Even though I was in a junior position there, I was part of the staff that was later recognized with the Pulitzer Prize for public service,” Margot recalls. This recognition solidified her belief in the power of journalism and communications to serve the public good.

After her time at The Miami Herald, she shifted into higher education communications, working at her alma mater, the University of Miami, and then moving on to leadership roles there, then at the University of Florida, and now UCF. “I have always loved getting people to tell me their stories, and interviewing is still one of my favorite things to do: getting people to talk,” she says.

Joining the Knight Family: A Lifelong Learner at UCF

Margot’s move into higher education was a natural fit. She reflects on her time as a student at UM, where she felt a need for better communication on campus. This realization propelled her into a career in university communications, where she has now been for over two decades.

“I’m a lifelong learner (just earned my second master’s degree) and love being part of a college campus and community. Every day is a contribution to the history of our university, and I love feeling like I am witness to that,” Margot shares.

Her journey to UCF was influenced by her love for Orlando and the opportunity to continue her work in higher education communications. “I thrive in a collaborative, diverse environment and love working with the talented team at Central Communications & Marketing,” she says. Margot is excited to be part of UCF's story and looks forward to sharing the university's impact in teaching, research, and service.

Advice for Aspiring Communicators: “Network, Network, Network!”

When asked what advice she would give to students or anyone looking to change their career, Margot emphasizes the importance of building connections. “My advice to students: network, network, network! The field of communications and marketing is so dynamic,” she explains.

For those who may not be ready for a full internship, Margot suggests shadowing professionals in the field to get a better sense of what the work entails. “Reach out and ask if you can shadow for a day to see if it’s right for you,” she advises.

Looking to the Future: Continuing the Journey at UCF

As Margot continues her career at UCF, her vision is to help share the incredible work happening across campus and build connections within the community. With her husband, Larry Clark, joining UCF's Nicholson School of Communication and Media as a public relations professor, Margot is excited about the future. “We are proud to call ourselves Knights!” she says.

Margot Winick’s journey is a testament to the power of storytelling, lifelong learning, and the importance of community. We are thrilled to have her on our team, helping to shape the narrative of UCF.

A Day in the Life of UCF Controls Specialist, Jeremy Evans

A Day in the Life of Jeremy Evans, Controls Specialist III for UCF Utilities and Engineering Services

A Successful Day Means Planning, Teamwork, and Communication!

Jeremy Evans is the Controls Specialist III for UCF Utilities and Engineering Services takes some time out of his busy schedule to share insight into a typical day and just how detailed it is to be successful in his role at the university.

The start of the day means creating a plan! Jeremy begins by reviewing any possible work orders that might have been submitted overnight as well as any outstanding tasks that may have rolled over from the previous day. Typical maintenance requests are submitted through a specific system; however, for urgent requests, his department is contacted directly to ensure any issues are given special attention.

Once he has a better grasp on the overall workload, he then creates a plan of action to delegate to his team. “I coordinate with other technicians to ensure that we are aligned and that each team member is aware of their responsibilities for the day.” But not all tasks are easy. “In some cases,” Jeremy says, “tasks may require the assistance of an additional technician.” Of course, delays can occur if they must wait for an available team member, but this is important so his team can provide the necessary support to get the job done.

Responsibilities and Current Projects Underway

Although the start of Jeremy’s day begins with coordinating workloads and delegating tasks to his team, that is only the beginning. After learning about his duties, his tasks go way beyond just managing and planning. He also creates interactive graphics for frontend user interfaces as well as other tech-based duties. “Additionally, I am tasked with writing CGL+ code, which is essential for operating the equipment. This code integrates with various sensors and relays to ensure the equipment operates in the most effective and efficient way possible.”

Jeremy also shares that he and his team are currently working on the controls for UCF Ferrell Commons buildings 7A and 7D. “This project involves replacing outdated HVAC controls with new, more efficient systems.” For those who may not know, HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, and for Florida residents, Jeremy and his team play a vital role for the University.

Wrapping Up the Day

As a Controls Specialist (III), communication is vital. This is no different for Jeremy when he wraps up at the end of the day. “We conduct a debrief to discuss the day’s accomplishments and identify any outstanding tasks.” Being able to discuss outstanding tasks means they can get a head start toward planning the next workday, but this isn’t the only reason why debriefs are important. Jeremy points out that “it also provides an opportunity for the team to inform (him) of any materials or resources that need to be ordered to support their work.”

When Collaborating or Working on Larger Projects, Having a Process is Key.

When it comes to collaborating with other Facilities staff or contractors on larger projects, implementing a process on how to stay organized throughout the different stages of certain projects is vital to making sure everyone is informed, stays on task, and completes the job. Jeremy’s process consists of three main steps: the Initial Project Meeting, the Internal Team Briefing, and the ongoing coordination and communication.

With larger projects, Jeremy participates in the initial project meeting to get a full overview of the job and look at any specific requirement that may arise. “During this meeting, I will address any potential concerns related to UCF building standards to ensure compliance and project feasibility.” After all the details are finalized, he provides his UES BAS team a comprehensive overview. “This briefing will focus on key objectives, potential challenges, and critical points for monitoring throughout the project lifecycle.” Finally, holding weekly meetings until the project is complete is vital to make sure each stage of the job stays on schedule. Jeremy says, “these meetings serve as a platform for status updates, issue resolution, and ensuring that all team members are informed and synchronized.

How has UCF supported you with your career aspirations? How Does UCF make you feel like you are part of something “more”?

“UCF has played a significant role in supporting my career aspirations by providing access to a wealth of resources, professional development opportunities, and a collaborative environment,” Jeremy says. “The university’s commitment to fostering growth and innovation has allowed me to advance my skills and contribute meaningfully to the projects I’m involved in.”

When working on projects to improve the university buildings, he and his team are directly impacting the well-being of UCF students, faculty, staff, and visitors. “UCF makes me feel like I’m part of something greater,” he says. “The university’s focus on positively impacting the broader community--through education, research, and outreach--aligns with my personal values and motivates me to contribute to initiatives that make a real difference.”

What would you tell someone who may be interested in working at UCF?

For those who are interested in a role at UCF, Jeremy shares that the university is a great company to work for. Not only does it promote growth from a professional standpoint, but a personal one as well. The university is a champion of innovation, and he continues to say the university also “values the contributions of every team member, making it a place where you can truly make an impact.” The difference Jeremy and his team make in the quality of life on the campus for the students, faculty, and visitors make his job a fulfilling one. “It’s an environment where you’ll feel part of something bigger, contributing to the meaningful initiatives that extend beyond the campus.”

Getting to Know an Assistant Director of Communications

Discovering Career Purpose and Opportunities: Assistant Director of Communications, Lindsey Amick's Journey with UCF

For Lindsey Amick, returning to the University of Central Florida (UCF) wasn’t just a career decision—it was coming home. A proud UCF alumna, Lindsey’s career path was filled with pivotal moments and valuable lessons that she now shares to inspire prospective candidates looking to join the UCF community.

Finding Direction: From Uncertainty to Opportunity

As a student at UCF’s Nicholson School of Communication and Media, Lindsey initially gravitated toward public relations. “I wasn’t exactly sure what public relations was at the time,” she admits. “But I knew I wanted to be working with the media, hosting events, telling stories.” Like many students, her understanding of her chosen field grew through experiences, particularly through the Nicholson School of Communications’ Advertising / Public Relations program. It was here that she began to uncover her passion for communications and marketing, areas that would shape her future career.

The Journey of Growth: From PR to Higher Education

After graduating, Lindsey’s career path took some exciting turns. She dove into public relations, gaining experience at an advertising agency that would prove to be one of her most formative career moments. “Working at the agency early on was crucial,” Lindsey reflects. “It taught me the foundation of creativity and innovation, and I worked with a diverse portfolio of clients, which allowed me to adapt to different industries and environments.”

Her adaptability proved especially important when her husband’s career in the Air Force took them across the country. Lindsey transitioned into freelance work, managing social media accounts, writing advertorials and various communications and collateral pieces and consulting on marketing strategy for clients in the higher education and health care spaces. Her experiences in marketing and communications led her into an Account Executive role, where she worked primarily with clients in the education sector—a role that would prepare her for a future in higher education.

Coming Back Home: Why UCF Was Always the Goal

While Lindsey’s career was thriving, her heart was always set on returning to Orlando. “When my husband and I decided to move back, I had a very short list of employers I was willing to move for, and UCF was at the top,” she says. Her belief in UCF’s mission and the power of higher education made joining UCF Advancement a perfect fit. After patiently watching for the right opportunity, Lindsey found her way back home to UCF, where she could combine her skills and passion for education in a meaningful way.

Advice for Future Candidates: Explore, Learn, and Adapt

One piece of advice Lindsey offers to prospective candidates is to try different environments early in their careers. “Whether it’s corporate, nonprofit or higher education, diversifying your experiences helps you understand where you best fit,” she explains. This adaptability has been key to her success, and she encourages others to explore various sectors to discover their strengths and passions.

Looking Ahead: A Unified Vision for UCF

Today, Lindsey’s vision for the future is to foster collaboration between UCF’s various colleges and partners. “I want to help continue the good work already being done to build a unified, cohesive communication strategy across UCF, and really explore all the ways in which UCF Advancement can help our fellow college and unit communicators reach their goals and dreams” she shares. For her, being part of UCF’s growth and contributing to its mission is more than a job—it’s a personal calling.

Lindsey Amick’s journey is a testament to the power of exploration, adaptability and finding your true purpose. For anyone considering a career with UCF, her story is a reminder that UCF is more than just a workplace—it’s a community where you can grow, thrive and make a lasting impact.

Supporting the UCF Community: 2025 Out of the Darkness Campus Walk

Supporting the UCF Community at the 2025 Out of the Darkness Campus Walk

On March 1, 2025, UCF Public Safety held its inaugural Out of the Darkness Campus Walk to raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. Hundreds of students, faculty, and community members gathered at Memory Mall to participate in the walk, which was organized in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), UCF Active Minds, UCF Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and UCF Restores. The event raised over $18,000 for AFSP’s research and educational programs — a significant achievement for a first-time event.

The walk began with an emotional opening ceremony featuring heartfelt speeches from survivors, mental health advocates, and university leaders. Chief Carl Metzger shared his personal experience of losing his nephew, Josh, to suicide. In his speech, Chief Metzger emphasized the importance of open dialogue about mental health, stating, “Three words: talk about it. If we talk about it, we can do something about it and help fix it. We can save lives and make a difference.”

Participants walked in remembrance of those lost and in support of those struggling, with many wearing honor beads representing their personal connections to the cause:

Orange – Loss of Sibling

White – Loss of Child

Gold – Loss of Parent

Red – Loss of Spouse/Partner

Purple – Loss of a Relative or Friend

Silver – First Responder or Military Loss

Green – Personal Struggle or Attempt

Teal – Supporting People Who Struggle or Have Attempted

Rainbow – Support of the LGBTQIA+ Community

Blue – Support for Suicide Prevention

The event held deep significance for the UCF community, which experienced the loss of three students to suicide in 2023. The walk provided a powerful opportunity for healing and connection, reinforcing the importance of mental health support and open conversations. Many participants expressed hope that this walk would become an annual tradition, fostering a culture of understanding and support at UCF.

One of the most meaningful aspects of the event was the strong sense of support from the UCF community and leadership. Working at UCF means being part of an organization that not only recognizes the importance of mental health but also actively supports it. The university’s commitment to student and staff well-being was evident in the organization and turnout of the event. Events like this remind us that UCF is more than just a place to work; it’s a community that cares.

A huge thank you to all the walkers and donors who helped make this event a success. The funds raised will support AFSP’s mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.

A Day in the Life of April Abreu, RN, Registered Nurse Specialist I for UCF’s Student Health Services

April Abreu, RN is a Registered Nurse Specialist I for UCF’s Student Health Services, where she provides essential nursing care to support student well-being. For more than seven years, she has worked as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) for UCF’s Student Health Services before she transitioned into her current role as Nurse Specialist I in March 2025.

What Does a Typical Day as a Registered Nurse Specialist I Look Like?

At the beginning of each shift, it’s important to complete all opening tasks. “I help prepare the office for the day, check upcoming appointments and help open sports medicine or the lab as needed.” Throughout the day, she performs routine responsibilities such as sterilizing clinical equipment, supporting ancillary clinics, and providing patient education. At the end of her shift, she ensures that all required documentation is completed, verifies that supplies are adequately stocked for the nursing staff, assist with patient triage for the late-night clinic, and upholds HIPAA compliance.

How Has UCF Supported Your Career Growth?

The University of Central Florida is committed to supporting employee growth and professional development. One of the biggest ways UCF invests in its employees is through a tuition reimbursement program, which covers up to two classes per semester. “Without the use of tuition reimbursement,” April says, “I honestly don’t think I could have obtained my education.” Now as an RN, UCF allowed her to transition from the LPN role to the RN role where she can use her skills to better serve the UCF community.

Be Your Own Hero!

Believing in herself was the key to chasing her dreams and overcoming obstacles. When asked who her hero is, April didn’t hesitate: “I am my own hero. I have worked so hard to accomplish my goals,” she said. After 22 years of service as a licensed practical nurse, achieving this major career milestone is a testament to her dedication, determination, and hard work.

Shaping the Future of Themed Entertainment: Getting to Know Professor Peter Weishar, Director of the Themed Experience Graduate Program at UCF

When people think about the magic of theme parks, their minds often jump to thrilling rides or immersive storytelling. However, behind these awe-inspiring experiences, lies a world of creativity, collaboration, and education. At the forefront of this innovation is Professor Peter Weishar, Director of the Themed Experience graduate program at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Through is visionary leadership, Weishar has helped shape one of the most innovative academic programs in the industry of themed entertainment.

The Birth of the UCF/Universal Creative Lab

The concept for the UCF/Universal Creative Lab emerged from an already strong relationship between UCF’s Themed Experience programs and Universal Creative. With industry leaders like Bob Ward and Mike West on the program’s Advisory Council—and Universal Creative Directors already involved in teaching classes—it was a natural progression toward deeper collaboration.

A pivotal moment came when Weishar met with Mark Woodbury, then-President of Universal Creative. “I proposed a deeper collaboration by suggesting this class,” Weishar recalls. “He said ‘yes’ right away.” In a serendipitous twist, that same day, Woodbury was promoted to Chairman of the Board—perfect timing for a perfect partnership.

A Course Like No Other

The UCF/Universal Creative Lab is more than just a class—it’s a transformative experience. Students gain unprecedented access to Universal’s creative process, learning directly from professionals in budgeting, engineering, creative direction, and more. “There’s no better place to study Themed Experience than Orlando,” says Weishar. “We teach best practices and cutting-edge techniques, grounded in story, design, and production.”

A week in the UCF/Universal Creative Lab course is anything but ordinary. More than half of the sessions take place at on-site Universal—in their design offices, exploring backstage areas, or inside the parks. One day, students might walk the queue line of Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure with creative directors and operations staff. The next, they’re backstage with engineers discussing safety and maintenance. These experiences are often followed by in-depth sessions on budgeting and production timelines.

What Sets UCF Apart?

UCF offers three graduate tracks in Themed Experience: an MFA that blends themed entertainment with technical theatre, and two MS concentrations—Design & Production and Creative Producing. “We’re located in the heart of the industry, part of a public institution, and offer tuition that’s thousands less than private schools,” Weishar explains. “That’s why we’re the largest and most competitive program in our field.”

From a faculty standpoint, the collaboration with Universal Creative has been “amazing.” Universal hires about 40% of UCF’s graduates and dozens of their professionals contribute to the curriculum. “We couldn’t do it as well without their support,” Weishar says. “It’s real-world experience at its best.”

Challenges, Triumphs, and Community

Weishar came to UCF with a dream: to create the premier graduate program in themed entertainment. With the support of visionary colleagues and leadership, that dream became a reality. “UCF is one of the most innovative universities in the country,” he says. “Few institutions would embrace a new discipline like this.”

One of Weishar’s favorite moments is when former students, now full-time employees of Universal, return to speak with current students. “They share what to expect in their first years on the job. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them giving back to the program that helped launch their careers.”

Advice for Future Faculty

Thinking of joining UCF? “It’s a place that supports innovation and new ideas,” Weishar advises. “The campus is beautiful, the location is ideal, and there’s always something happening in Orlando. Just be ready for more paperwork than you thought possible!”

Empowering Through Education: Getting to Know Dr. Keri Watson

Empowering Through Education: Getting to Know Dr. Keri Watson, Executive Director of the Florida Prison Education Project (FPEP) and Associate Professor of Art History at UCF

Dr. Keri Watson is a scholar, leader, and change-maker whose work bridges the worlds of art, education, and social justice. As Executive Director of the Florida Prison Education Project and Associate Professor of Art History at UCF, she is transforming lives and communities through the power of knowledge and creative expression.

Dr. Watson’s Remarkable Career Journey

Since joining the University of Central Florida in 2014, Dr. Keri Watson brings a wealth of experience from her previous teaching roles at Ithaca College, Auburn University, and the Savannah College of Art and Design. She earned her Ph.D. in Art History from Florida State University in 2010 and is also an established

author. She has written This is America: Re-Viewing the Art of the United States (2022) with Keidra Daniels Navaroli and was a co-editor of The Routledge Companion to Art and Disability (2022).

Additionally, she serves as the Finance and Grants Manager for Panorama: Journal of the Association of Historians of American Art and her work on American Art has been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Fulbright-Terra Foundation, and the Society for the Preservation of American Modernists. Art enthusiasts can find her research published in journals like Source: Notes in the History of Art, Mosaic: A Journal for the Interdisciplinary Study of Literature, Southern Cultures, and Journal of Surrealism and the Americas to name a few.

As the current Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Central Florida and Executive Director of the Florida Prison Education Project (FPEP), which she founded in 2017, she leads the initiative to offer undergraduate education to those in the Central Florida prison system.

The Inspiration for the Florida Prison Education Project

Dr. Watson’s inspiration for the Florida Prison Education Project stemmed from her experience teaching at Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) where she had her first opportunity teaching at a prison. Once she arrived to UCF, she searched for similar opportunities.

Coincidentally, at that same time, Dr. Hitt—who was UCF’s President at the time—launched a strategic plan that called for more engagement with the community. Motivated by the gap she felt, she took the initiative and proposed the Florida Prison Education Project. “We presented our project and after a campus-wide vote, FPEP was designated of two Community Challenge initiatives,” she shares. Learn more about the UCF Community Challenge initiatives in the UCF news article: UCF Community Challenge Initiative Backs 2 Projects.

Balancing Her Role as Executive Director of FPEP and UCF’s Associate Professor of Art History

When finding ways to balance both roles, Dr. Watson finds common ground. “I received a two-year grant from the National Endowment for the Arts,” she says, which has allowed her to continue her work in art and share the correlations between art and incarceration, injustices, and inequities. “I am currently editing a collection, America’s Carceral Landscape: The Art, Material Culture, and Visual Aesthetics of Confinement.” Dr. Watson explains, “the fourteen collected essays consider art that exposes, challenges, and participates in the oppressive forces that mark the contours of America’s carceral landscape.”

The Vision for the Future of the Florida Prison Education Project

If there’s one word that captures the future of the Florida Prison Education

Project, it’s ‘growth.’ They are working hard to increase awareness across campus and donate books to prison libraries. When it comes to their workforce and students, they are bringing on more faculty to offer more classes, expanding to more prisons, and even offer scholarships to UCF students who want to major in criminal justice and prison education.

Dr. Watson also mentions another exciting new initiative. The Florida Education Project will be “helping colleagues at other colleges and universities across Florida start similar programs,” she says, impacting not just Central Florida, but the entire state of Florida as well.

How has UCF Supported Her Career Goals and What Advice Would You Give Someone Interested in Working at UCF?

“UCF is a wonderful place to work,” Dr. Watson shares, “I have been supported by my department and college as I have pursued this project and others. Provost Mike Johnson, CAH Dean Jeff Moore, and SVAD Director Rudy McDaniel have offered much needed encouragement and mentorship for which I am grateful and staff members across the university have offered incredible support for FPEP.”

For those who are interested in working at UCF, Dr. Watson has two simple yet impactful words for you, “Get Involved!”

How to Get Involved with FPEP

Visit the Florida Prison Education Project’s website to learn how to be involved. Donors, teachers, and volunteers are always welcomed.

Behind the Scenes at UCF: A Day in the Life of Dale Lance, Director of Utilities

Behind the Scenes at UCF: A Day in the Life of Dale Lance, Director of Utilities

As you walk across the sprawling campus of the University of Central Florida, you might not think about the intricate systems that keep the lights on, the air cool, and the water flowing. But for Dale Lance, Director of Utilities, those systems are not just essential--they're his life’s work and his passion.

From Groundskeeper to Director

Dale’s journey at UCF began 26 years ago--just two weeks after graduating from high school. What was supposed to be a temporary job as a groundskeeper quickly evolved into a lifelong career. “I planned on staying six months to a year,” Dale recalls. “Now at 44, I oversee all campus utilities.”

He rose up through the ranks thanks to his dedication, skill, and a deep understanding of the university’s infrastructure. “Every time I turned around, another department kind of fell underneath me,” he says with a laugh.

Running a Small City

UCF’s utilities system is massive—more like a small city than a college campus. Under the leadership of Dale and his dedicated team, this complex infrastructure ensures the campus runs smoothly across several key areas:

Drinking water: Over 250 million gallons produced annually.

Sewage: Up to 800,000 gallons transported daily.

Electricity: Between 20% and 60% of campus power is generated on-site.

Chilled water: Used for HVAC for 73% of the campus.

Stormwater and reclaimed water systems: Essential for sustainability and flood prevention.

Together, these systems form the unseen yet indispensable framework that keeps UCF running like a well-oiled machine. “If our systems go down, the campus will shut down,” Dale explains. “No water means no fire suppression, no bathrooms, and no safety.” The UCF Utilities team and their processes are an essential backbone supporting the daily life of tens of thousands of students, faculty, and staff.

Prepared for Anything

Dale thrives in high-pressure situations--and in Florida, there aren't many challenges more demanding than hurrican season. He’s been on campus for every hurricane since 1999, including Hurricane Floyd, which he weathered out from inside the library to safeguard its collections. “I thrive in chaos,” he admits. “The higher the stakes, the more I love it.”

Thanks to meticulous planning and dilligent infrastructure maintenance, UCF has never lost power during a storm under Dale’s leadership. Even during historic flooding, the campus remained operational while surrounding neighborhoods were submerged.

Technology and Teamwork

With a lean team of just 13–14 people, Dale relies heavily on automation and remote monitoring. “We’ve built internal systems that allow us to do more with less,” he says. “I’ve diagnosed issues from my phone while standing in line at Epcot.”

But he’s not just a behind-the-scenes operator. Dale regularly works alongside his staff in the field, turning wrenches and mentoring the next generation of utility professionals, some of whom he coached in high school.

A Legacy of Impact

Dale’s story is one of loyalty, leadership, and legacy. He’s watched UCF grow from a commuter school to one of the largest universities in the country. “We went from 34,000 students to over 70,000,” he says. “And I’ve been part of every step.”

As he looks toward retirement in the next decade, Dale is focused on training his successors and ensuring the systems he helped build continue to thrive. “This place is a destination, not a steppingstone,” he says. “If you’re willing to put in the work, UCF offers so much.”

The Evolution of UCF's Spirit Splash

The Evolution of UCF’s Spirit Splash: From Foam Figures to Lucky Ducks

Every fall, the University of Central Florida (UCF) bursts into celebration with one of its most beloved traditions: Spirit Splash. What began as a spontaneous plunge into the Reflecting Pond has grown into a full-blown spectacle of school spirit, giveaways, and unforgettable memories.

The 1997 Splash That Started It All

The 1997 Spirit Splash was a landmark event. It featured a vibrant mix of football players, dancers, cheerleaders, and the local band Average Joe. UCF’s mascot Knightro made a splash alongside his then-girlfriend, Glycerine. The Homecoming Committee went all out, tossing pennants, Frisbees, cups, golf towels, and even Knightro dolls into the crowd.

That year, the basketball team joined the festivities to promote their game against Auburn. Led by the Marching Knights, the crowd marched to the arena in full force. Although UCF lost the game 63–70, they bounced back the next day with a 27–10 victory over Eastern Michigan in the Homecoming Football Game. And just like that, Spirit Splash became a tradition.

From Foam Figures to Ducks

In the years that followed, Spirit Splash giveaways evolved. Foam Knightro stress balls and other figures were popular until one year, when a

logistical hiccup changed everything. One year, the foam figures weren’t ordered in time, so the team needed a quick replacement that was small, safe to toss into a crowd, affordable, and could be delivered fast. That’s when they came up with the idea of using rubber ducks instead.

The rubber duck idea stuck. Now, each year features a custom-designed duck, making them not just souvenirs but collectibles.

Ducks That Bring Luck (and Dollars)

The earliest duck in the university archives dates back to 2002. Since then, the ducks have taken on a life of their own.

Some students believe the ducks bring good luck for the rest of the semester. Others see them as a quick way to make cash—some ducks have reportedly sold for up to $100! And then there are the collectors, who treasure each year’s unique design as part of their UCF legacy.

Ducks in the Workplace: The Ducky Awards

The duck craze isn’t just for students. UCF employees joined the fun. On the Talent Team, a new tradition began in 2024 called the Ducky Awards, where the talent team members are honored with a rubber duck alongside their recognition. It’s a playful and meaningful way to celebrate achievements while keeping the Spirit Splash energy alive year-round.

One employee even received a UCF grad duck from her boss to commemorate completing her MBA. A thoughtful gesture that unfortunately met its end in the jaws of her dog.

Whether you're diving into the Reflecting Pond or receiving a ducky award at work, Spirit Splash continues to unite the UCF community in quirky, heartfelt ways. So next time you catch a duck, hold onto it. It might just be more than a souvenir.

Charging Toward Greatness: UCF's Path to Preeminence

Charging Toward Greatness: UCF’s Path to Preeminence

Earlier this Fall, President Alexander N. Cartwright announced a historic milestone for the University of Central Florida. UCF has met the criteria to become Florida’s next Preeminent State Research University. This achievement is more than a reflection of institutional excellence. It’s a tribute to the talent, dedication, and resilience of our faculty, staff, and students.

A Legacy of Boldness and Innovation

From its earliest days, UCF has been defined by bold ambition. Our first classes were taught in unfinished buildings, our labs built from surplus equipment, and our traditions were invented on the spot. We didn’t wait for prestige. We built it. That same spirit continues to drive us today.

Now, with the outcomes required for preeminence achieved, UCF stands among the very best. While official certification from the Florida Board of Governors is anticipated in 2026, the celebration begins now.

Helping Knights Thrive

Student success is central to UCF’s mission. In 2023, the university launched a new model of support through academic success coaches who guide students in setting goals, managing coursework, and accessing campus

resources. Faculty also plays a key role, with initiatives like early progress reports in first-year composition courses helping identify and support at-risk students.

These efforts have contributed to a significant rise in UCF’s four-year graduation rate, now at 63.8%, up 14 points in just four years. Demonstrating the power of personalized support and a campuswide commitment to student achievement.

Fueling Innovation

UCF’s research enterprise spans disciplines from space exploration and engineering to healthcare and cybersecurity, generating over $285 million in annual research expenditures. The Office of Technology Transfer helps bring discoveries to market through patents, licensing, and startup formation, strengthening industry partnerships and attracting new funding.

With national recognition for its patent output and a robust support system behind its researchers, UCF continues to expand its impact and reputation as a leader in innovation.

Celebrating Together

The entire Knight Nation gathered in a campuswide celebration at the Reflecting Pond to honor our shared success and look ahead to the bold future we’re building together.

The Road Ahead

Preeminence is not the finish line. It’s a launchpad. It opens doors to increased state funding, expanded research opportunities, and enhanced student success. Most importantly, it strengthens our commitment to investing in the people who make UCF extraordinary.

Join the Journey

Whether you're a student, faculty member, alum, or supporter, your role in UCF’s story matters. Together, we are daring to boldly invent the future.

Chief Robin Griffin-Kitzerow's Vision for Transformative Campus Policing at UCF

“Dr. Chief”: Robin Griffin-Kitzerow’s Vision for Transformative Campus Policing at UCF

When Robin Griffin-Kitzerow officially stepped into her new role as Chief of Police at the University of Central Florida on July 4, 2025, she joked that fireworks should be part of her work anniversary every year. That lighthearted moment reflects the warmth and humor she brings to a role that demands both strategic leadership and the ability to navigate high-pressure situations.

But behind the celebratory start date is a leader whose career spans more than three decades in public safety and education, and whose impact is already being felt across campus.

A Career Rooted in Service and Strategy

Chief Griffin-Kitzerow’s journey began as Dispatcher and evolved through leadership roles at Florida Atlantic University and the Palm Beach County School District. Her resume reads like a blueprint for modern policing: juvenile rehabilitation, threat assessment, officer development, and community engagement.

Her academic credentials are equally impressive. She recently earned a PhD in forensic psychology from Walden University, adding to her three master’s degrees in psychology, public administration, and forensic psychology, along with a bachelor’s in organizational management. This blend of law enforcement experience and psychological expertise gives her a unique lens on campus safety.

Transforming UCFPD from the Inside Out

Since joining UCFPD as deputy chief in 2022, Griffin-Kitzerow has played a key role in advancing the department’s efforts in crisis response, threat management, and officer development. Among her most significant contributions is the refinement of the Threat Management Team – a unit originally established by former UCF Police Chief and current Associate Vice President of Public Safety, Carl Metzger. This multidisciplinary team, which includes detectives, an intelligence analyst, and a mental health clinician, is dedicated to ensuring individuals of concern are carefully monitored and compassionately supported.

Her leadership style is forward-thinking and collaborative. “We are a proactive law enforcement agency,” she says. “That means we’re out there looking to support and help, whether that’s through traffic enforcement, tabling events, or simply walking around and talking to our students.”

Building the Future of Law Enforcement

Chief Griffin-Kitzerow is passionate about shaping the next generation of officers. Under her guidance, UCFPD has launched the Explorer and cadet programs that tap into the university’s talent pool of criminal justice majors. The department also sponsors qualified graduates to attend the law enforcement academy, creating a direct pipeline from classroom to career.

Her advice to aspiring officers is clear. “Consistently[AS1] seek opportunities to enhance your professional marketability,” she says. “Learn a second language, get an advanced degree, obtain certifications, and do benevolent work in the community. And most importantly, make sure your values align with the organization you want to serve.”

The Heart Behind the Badge

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Chief Griffin-Kitzerow is a proud mom, “Mimi” to three grandchildren, and a devoted dog lover. “Sometimes I have to remind myself to take off my chief hat and put on my mom hat,” she shares. “As a chief, I’m a fixer. But as a mom, especially adult children, sometimes you just need to listen and walk alongside them.”

Her ability to balance leadership with empathy is part of what makes her so effective and so beloved within the UCF community.

What Knight Nation Means to Her

Though she’s only been at UCF for a few years, Griffin-Kitzerow feels deeply connected to Knight Nation. “I say all the time, I wish I could have met you all sooner so I could have loved you longer,” she says. “Knight Nation is a close, cohesive family, and the work we do is critically important. It’s my pleasure to come to work every day and be part of this community.”

She also emphasizes the importance of collaboration, not just within UCF, but across Central Florida. “We have wonderful working relationships with our neighboring jurisdictions. While UCFPD has 82 sworn officers, our partnerships with neighboring agencies allow us to operate with the strength of thousands.” “That spirit of cooperation is unlike anything I’ve experienced before.”

Looking Ahead

As she builds on the legacy of her predecessor, Carl Metzger, Chief Griffin-Kitzerow is focused on leveraging technology to fight and prevent crime, expanding community engagement, and continuing to elevate UCFPD as a benchmark-setting agency.

Her title, “Dr. Chief,” is more than a nickname. It’s a reflection of her subject matter expertise, her commitment to continuous learning, and her unwavering dedication to public service.

Ready to be part of a team that’s transforming campus safety?

Discover career opportunities with UCFPD and join a department driven by purpose, fueled by compassion, and led by the inspiring “Dr. Chief.”

Welcoming Knights to UCF: A Look Inside New Employee Orientation

Welcoming Knights to UCF: A Look Inside New Employee Orientation

Starting a new position is an important milestone, and at the University of Central Florida, an employee’s first impression is intended to be a welcoming and empowering experience. New Employee Orientation (NEO) is designed to do more than provide administrative information; it supports new employees in feeling connected, informed, and prepared from their first day. Led by Zakia Brown, Training Specialist II with the HR Talent Development team, this half-day session introduces new faculty and staff members to the culture, values and resources that contribute to the university’s workplace environment.

“It’s such an honor to lead New Employee Orientation,” Zakia says. “I truly enjoy being the first face that welcomes new employees and officially introduces them to our organization in a warm and positive way.”

The primary goal is to ensure that new employees feel supported and enthusiastic about the journey ahead. Whether individuals are joining the university from across the country or just across campus, the environment is intentionally welcoming. It’s natural to feel a bit nervous when employees first arrive, but as new faces begin connecting with one another, sharing stories, and discovering all the ways their talent will contribute to the broader UCF mission, nerves quickly turn into enthusiasm.

One of the most valuable aspects of orientation is the opportunity to hear directly from the Payroll and Benefits Team. Starting a new position often means navigating new systems, enrolling in benefits, and getting acquainted with pay schedules and procedures. Rather than leaving employees to sift through information on their own, a Payroll and Benefits representative walks them through key processes, offers reminders about important deadlines, and answers questions in real time. This direct connection helps new staff feel both confident and informed as they take care of their onboarding tasks.

Zakia shares the rich culture of UCF as well as a wide array of campus services available to new employees. “I have the privilege of sharing our history and culture, explaining our employee perks, and guiding them around campus—even taking them to lunch.”

From wellness resources, like the Employee Assistance Program and professional development opportunities to discounted attraction tickets through BenefitHub, UCF offers a wide range of support that helps employees feel engaged both professionally and personally.

New employees also have the opportunity to enjoy a guided bus tour of the main campus. Led by Zakia, the tour offers a chance to get some fresh air while exploring key locations across the site. The experience also includes a short walk to the Reflecting Pond, a well-known campus landmark located in front of Millican Hall. The final stop? Lunch – a perfect way to wrap up the bus tour!

How UCF Supports Her Career Goals

When asked how UCF has supported her own goals, Zakia shares that “New Employee Orientation has allowed me to develop my leadership, communication, and mentorship skills while making a meaningful impact on new employees. UCF encourages learning.”

Advice For Someone Interested in Working at UCF

At the end of the day, Zakia closes with a message that brings everyone together—an invitation to embrace their role in shaping UCF’s future. It’s an energizing reminder that every individual plays a part in creating a dynamic and impactful experience. “UCF is more than just a workplace—it’s a community. It’s important to build relationships, get involved, and even join clubs or campus groups to truly feel connected.” Zakia also encourages new employees to “bloom where you are planted,” underscoring the value of growing and thriving right where they begin.

There are so many opportunities to grow at UCF. “Be proactive, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.”

Knight-Thon

Knight-Thon: How UCF Students Are Making a Difference

Every spring, the University of Central Florida’s campus comes alive with music, energy, and purpose as thousands of students gather for Knight‑Thon—UCF’s largest student‑driven philanthropy and one of the university’s most impactful traditions. What began three decades ago as a student‑led effort to support local children’s health has grown into a powerful movement that unites Knights across campus around a single mission: making a difference for the Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.

Knight‑Thon is part of the national Miracle Network Dance Marathon program, a network of more than 300 colleges and universities that raise funds and awareness for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. But at UCF, this annual tradition has taken on a life of its own. The fundraising efforts unfold across an entire year—driven by student leaders, campus organizations, volunteers, and supportive community partners. Together, they work toward a common goal: providing life‑changing support for children and families receiving care at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.

The movement culminates each spring with the highly anticipated Dance Marathon, a celebration of the impact made throughout the year. More than 1,500 UCF Knights gather for a high‑energy event filled with dancing, performances, storytelling, and moments of reflection. Participants stand for those who cannot, honoring the children and families who inspire Knight‑Thon’s mission. It is a tradition that blends school spirit with compassionate action, showcasing the heart of the UCF community.

Over the past 29 years, Knight‑Thon has raised more than $11 million, directly benefiting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. That impact continued to grow in Knight‑Thon’s milestone 30th year, when UCF students raised an outstanding $626,416.29—a testament to the dedication, creativity, and generosity of Knight Nation.

The spirit of Knight‑Thon is guided by the words of the late Arnold Palmer, the hospital’s namesake: “We can do better, and we should do better for the children of our community.” UCF students have embraced this vision wholeheartedly, demonstrating the strength of a community that believes in lifting others up. Their efforts not only support children’s health—they also embody the values of service, leadership, and compassion that define what it means to be a Knight.

For prospective employees exploring opportunities at UCF, Knight‑Thon offers a glimpse into the vibrant culture that shapes this institution. UCF is a university where students lead meaningful initiatives, where collaboration thrives, and where the commitment to community extends far beyond the classroom. Events like Knight‑Thon showcase the passion, innovation, and drive that make UCF a place where people come together to create lasting impact. It is an environment that inspires purpose—and one where future employees can find a career that aligns with their values.

As Knight‑Thon prepares for its next event on April 11, 2026, excitement is already building across campus. Student teams are forming, fundraising campaigns are launching, and the community is rallying once again in support of children’s health. Whether you are a future UCF employee, a community supporter, or simply someone who believes in the power of collective action, Knight‑Thon is an inspiring reminder of what we can achieve when we work together.

To learn more about Knight‑Thon and how it continues to make a difference on the Office of Student Advisement website

Transforming the Future of Nursing Education

UCF’s New Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion is Transforming the Future of Nursing Education

The University of Central Florida has entered a defining moment with the opening of the Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion in Lake Nona, next door to UCF’s College of Medicine, healthcare partners and industry innovators.

This new state-of-the-art facility expands opportunities for learning, research, and collaboration, reinforcing UCF’s commitment to positively impact its communities with excellence and purpose.

A Pivotal Moment for UCF Nursing

As Dean Sharon J. Tucker explains, “UCF’s College of Nursing is propelling nursing education and practice forward, boldly leading into a brighter and healthier future for all.”

She’s boldly leading the college forward by focusing on partnerships, innovation, and its people.

“Lake Nona is an extraordinary environment that inspires human potential through collaboration and innovation and promotes wellbeing by design,” Tucker says. “We’re leveraging these realities to facilitate greater collaboration across disciplines and industry in both education and research.”

A Facility Designed for Innovation

The Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion includes expanded lab space for students to learn, a design studio to accelerate nurse-led innovations, and the latest in immersive technologies in the Helene Fuld Health Trust STIM Center, the first in Florida to receive three major simulation accolades.

Dean Tucker highlights the impact, stating, “The Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion will improve nursing education and patient care by advancing faculty research, supporting the development of new best practices, and preparing students for clinical practice.”

Associate Professor Rebecca S. Koszalinski who leads the HHOT Lab, is one of the faculty members benefiting from the expanded lab space. “The biobehavioral lab is my favorite place in the new facility,” she says. “It is rare to have this space in a college of nursing. It means that we can help nursing students appreciate the linkages between bench and bedside.”

Why Educators Choose UCF

“UCF is a diamond not only here in Florida, but beyond as our reach and impact knows no bounds,” says Tucker.

UCF’s innovative and community-driven culture attracts faculty experts from across the U.S. who are committed to making an impact. As Tucker notes, “Faculty are collaborative, committed to student success and focused on providing a high-quality education as evidenced in our graduates’ licensure and board certification pass rates.”

Faculty across the college echo this sentiment. Koszalinski says, "What UCF advertises is what UCF delivers. Students, faculty members and the leadership team all operate through an open and collaborative system."

This commitment to openness and collaboration is a defining part of the UCF experience. It reflects a culture where faculty feel supported and where students benefit from strong relationships with educators who are invested in their success.

A Symbol of Energy and Purpose

A focal point of the new building is “Vitality,” a suspended public art installation that symbolizes connection and impact created by designer and artist Brian W. Brush.

The inspiring installation uses light to reflect how the smallest gestures accumulate into meaningful change — a message that resonates deeply within the nursing profession.

As Associate Professor Michael Joseph “MJ” Dino states, “What you do matters, and you deserve an environment that reflects that.”

Dean Tucker connects the art to the college’s mission. “The public art that hangs in our lobby serves as a visual reminder that we are bringing vitality into our communities with our action,” she says.

Partnerships Build Brighter Futures

Partnerships were vital to the creation of the Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion.

As Tucker shares, “UCF’s Pegasus Partners, the State of Florida and the community played a critical role in helping us bring the bold vision of this facility to life.”

These collaborations extend far beyond the physical building. Through clinical opportunities with leading healthcare organizations, UCF nursing students gain valuable hands-on experience that deepens their learning and prepares them for today’s complex healthcare environments.

“We will to continue to collaborate to ensure a healthier and brighter future because a vision is not static. It is a dynamic, living guide for our actions to transform the future,” adds Tucker.

A Transformational Community Impact

With the expanded space in the Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion, UCF will graduate an additional 150 newly licensed eligible nurses each year. This is significant in a state where one in four nursing graduates already comes from UCF.

UCF is solving healthcare’s greatest challenges and “directly addressing Florida’s nursing shortage as 85% of our more than 17,000 Knight nurse alumni are in Florida and nearly 60% stay in Central Florida” says Tucker.

A Legacy for Generations

The new facility stands as a place where future Knight nurses will grow, learn, and discover their purpose. Every classroom, lab, and shared space reflects an environment designed to support curiosity, compassion, and the drive to improve patient care for generations to come.

“Nurses are the heartbeat of healthcare, and this facility is preparing more Knight nurses and doing so in a collaborative, innovative and wellness-focused environment,” says Tucker. “We are ensuring our graduates are not only prepared to provide compassionate, highly skilled clinical care but to also know how to take care of themselves to prevent burnout.”

Instructor Kelsey Gaffka '16BSN '22MSN shares, "I am proud to be part of an organization that is trusted to prepare the next generation of exceptional nurses."

Nurse Executive DNP program co-director Jayne Willis ’20DNP describes the Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion as “a powerful symbol of UCF’s commitment to the future of nursing and to the health of our community.”

Together, these reflections highlight the lasting impact of the Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion. It is more than a building. It is a legacy in motion, preparing Knight nurses who will strengthen the health of communities across Central Florida and beyond.

Growing a Career: A Nonlinear Path to Leadership

Growing a Career: A Nonlinear Path to Leadership

As a Florida native, Jennifer Sumner, PhD, always knew UCF was special. Her mother graduated from UCF’s nursing program, and after completing her associate degree, she transferred to UCF alongside her twin sister to continue her studies. What she didn’t know then was that UCF would become the place where she would build her entire career—one opportunity, one challenge, and one bold step at a time.

Today, Dr. Sumner serves as Assistant Vice President of Academic Success Coaching and Executive Director of the UCF Higher Education Coaching Academy, leading one of the largest student coaching initiatives in the nation. Her journey from student to senior leader is a testament to what’s possible when curiosity meets opportunity.

A Career That Started with Opportunity

During her undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral years, Dr. Sumner immersed herself in campus life, including student jobs, internships, practicums, research, and leadership roles. “I realized then that UCF was a special place, and as opportunities presented themselves, I took advantage of them,” she said. UCF’s commitment to innovation and bold approaches created an environment where she could explore, experiment, and grow.

Those early experiences shaped her understanding of the university and its people. “Having ‘grown up’ at UCF, I have seen the growth and can also imagine the possibilities,” she reflected. Her time as a student helps her empathize with today’s Knights, while her years as staff and faculty give her insight into the systems that support them.

A Nonlinear Path to Leadership

When asked to describe her career in one word, Dr. Sumner chose nonlinear. She didn’t begin with an end goal. Instead, she followed her interests, embraced new challenges, and allowed each experience to shape the next.

Her path reflects that mindset:

She first started as a Graduate Teaching Assistant during her doctoral program.

After graduation, she became a dual faculty member and program coordinator for the Health Sciences Pre-Clinical major.

She later served as Director for both the Pre-Clinical and Health Services Administration majors.

Driven by an interest in experiential learning, she transitioned into the role of Director of Internships for four majors, partnering with healthcare organizations nationwide.

She then became a leader supporting the Bachelor of Applied Sciences major and DirectConnect to UCF.

She collaborated with leadership in the Division of Digital Learning on the creation and implementation of UCF Online.

She developed a passion for student coaching and became Assistant Vice Provost for UCF Online.

When UCF centralized campus advising, she assumed the inaugural role of Assistant Vice President of Academic Success Coaching.

“It has been quite the ride!” she said. Each role expanded her skills, broadened her perspective, and prepared her for the next opportunity.

Moments That Made a Difference

Several turning points shaped Dr. Sumner’s career. One was co-leading the multiyear, university-wide Foundations of Excellence project, where she and her colleagues led more than 200 administrators, faculty, staff, students, and community partners in improving the transfer student experience.

Another was helping build UCF Online’s student services and coaching team. With support from senior leaders, she developed a team of Success Coaches who transformed the university’s work with distance learners.

Most recently, leading the centralized Academic Success Coaching model—now one of the largest in the nation — has been “one of the most rewarding experiences” of her career.

A Culture That Encourages Growth

Dr. Sumner credits her development to the mentors and innovators she has worked alongside. “Whether through observing how they lead or through direct mentorship, each have imparted their wisdom, for which I am grateful.”

UCF’s dynamic culture as a higher education institution has also played a major role. In addition to formal opportunities such as tuition waivers, professional development training, and intellectual resources, Dr. Sumner encourages colleagues to embrace informal opportunities across the institution such as serving on committees, volunteering for projects, seeking mentors, and finding areas to lead.

She emphasizes that growth is a partnership: “There are great opportunities here for career advancement and internal mobility, but one must also be willing to look for those opportunities and, more importantly, prepare for them.”

Work That Changes Lives

Today, Dr. Sumner leads a team that directly supports UCF’s mission. Every undergraduate student is assigned an Academic Success Coach who supports them academically and holistically from orientation to graduation. “The work of our Academic Success Coaches has helped the university to exceed its metric goals and significantly impact the success of our students,” she said.

What motivates her each morning is simple: “The fact that we get to impact the lives of students.” She is especially inspired by her team. “I am aspired by the dedication that they have for students and the perseverance they have shown through much change”.

A Career Intertwined With UCF’s Evolution

Over nearly 20 years, Dr. Sumner has watched UCF transform — from dirt parking lots to Memory Mall, from a fledgling football team to a nationally recognized powerhouse. But the biggest evolution, she says, is how the university welcomes, teaches, and supports students. “While change is always disruptive, for me change has also been a catalyst for growth.”

Two moments stand out as points of pride: UCF’s response to COVID-19 and Hurricane Ian. “The university community rallied, fostered a spirit of caring, and helped to support each other through these events. It was Knights helping Knights, which was amazing.”

A Legacy Honored on Founders’ Day

As Founders’ Day approaches — a day when UCF honors the outstanding accomplishments and contributions of our employees, faculty, and students, and recognizes our exceptional people for their impact and pursuit of excellence — Dr. Sumner reflects on what it means to be part of UCF’s long-serving community. Recently, she attended a meeting where nearly everyone had been at UCF for more than a decade. A new colleague remarked they had never seen such longevity.

“It is very rewarding to be working alongside colleagues who have the same commitment and connection to the University,” she said.

Her journey embodies the spirit of UCF: bold, innovative, and deeply committed to student success. Just as UCF continues to grow, so has she. And her story is a reminder to future Knights: at UCF, careers aren’t just launched, they’re developed, supported, and sustained.
