UCF Downtown invites well qualified candidates to apply for the role of Controls Specialist II. This position is responsible for repairs, replacements, installation, tests, troubleshooting, and preventative and corrective maintenance on building automation systems and ancillary electronic equipment that is essential to the control of the campus's central energy plant and building HVAC systems.

Duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Performs assigned system maintenance and repairs to the central energy plant, buildings, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, VFD’s, actuators, terminal devices, heat strips, boilers, controllers, BAS panels and PLCs. Installs building
    controls for retrofits and new construction projects.

  • Monitor and respond to upset conditions, hot / cold calls, alarm events, and tripped assets. Performs orderly start up and shut down of plant equipment. Works with other campus technician / technical disciplines and F&S management as assigned to proactively assess and rectify multi-disciplinary system issues.

  • Monitor contract labor involved in plant maintenance activities and BAS work throughout the downtown campus. Oversee the completion of work conducted by third-party OEM contracts for warranty, scheduled services and outages and unscheduled repairs.

  • Utilize computers and smart device technology to monitor and maintain Chiller Plant Control System . Will ensure all mechanical and electrical work is performed in a safe and effective manner. Perform critical tests, such as laser alignments, vibration analysis and thermal imaging to ensure system integrity.

  • Oversee chemical treatment contract for condenser and evaporator water circuits to ensure water chemistry is within control limits for pH, conductivity, scale, and hardness.

  • Ensure university / regulatory compliance with the safe handling of chemicals, refrigerants, gases and record keeping requirements are met and continually monitored

  • Maintains a clean, organized, and tidy work environment.

  • Develops scopes of work for all planned plant maintenance cycles, including obtaining bids, award of contracts and contractor oversight of repair activities and minor projects related to the plant generation and distribution system.

  • Performs troubleshooting and diagnosis of HVAC issues and directs corrective work flow through the campus Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS). Performs corrective action such as sensor replacement. Refers mechanical issues to the appropriate maintenance team for correction.

  • Performs other duties as assigned. May be asked to assist other departments in times of personnel shortage or emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 4+ years of relevant experience. The UCF policy requires completion and passing of a physical exam for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of HVAC systems, boilers, air compressors, etc.
  • Experience in the safe usage of hand and power tools.
  • Experience reading blueprints.
  • Familiarity with electrical schematics.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Position requires a valid Class E driver’s license (regular license). This position may involve driving to various locations on and off campus to conduct university business.
