Job Description:

The Network Architect II position is responsible for high-level Local Area Network (LAN) strategic and tactical planning, network standards and guidelines for network platforms/hardware to support data, voice, video, email, building control, and security. Develops the strategy and direction for the university LAN using current and emerging technologies. Translates business requirements into network or process designs. Tactical planning involves the establishment of annual (up to 5 yr) projections for LAN network refreshments. Additional job duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provides the most advanced level of network architecture. Specific focus on network design, processes and installation of the University Enterprise Local Area Network.
  • Must be able to solve highly complex networking issues through physical and logical investigation.
  • Develop written document(s) on Local Area Network topologies, standards, configurations which are reviewed and updated/modified annually or as required. Collaborate with all UCF IT teams to ensure designs/standards create and achieve division and university system goals and requirements.
  • Actively research and apply knowledge to LAN networking technology. Perform evaluations of LAN network topologies, hardware and software. Develop and implement test plans and document results. Guide the selection, implementation, and deployment for new technology roll-outs.
  • Ability to work directly with manufacturer escalation services (Cisco and Extreme TAC), process RMA's and communicate effectively with UCF IT Telecommunications management and UCF customers.
  • Will provide the highest level of networking instruction and mentoring for the various team members working on or in conjunction with LAN technology. Will assist other team members with tickets, projects, documentation and escalation (if required). Includes Quality Control review of each completed projected.
  • Utilizes network software to effectively monitor overall network health, utilization, potential issues. Based on system information provides status reports and solutions to current or future network issues. Leverage automated languages.
  • Follows Standard Operating Procedures as determined by the specific sub group within the department. This includes work-order/ ticket flows, documentation, outage communication and customer interactions.
  • Ability to work within a Telecom Enterprise Management software application (ServiceNow and Pinnacle) to receive, document, respond and record various trouble tickets and service requests.
  • Attends various seminars, training and conferences related to current or emerging technology. Will be given various opportunities to obtain certifications based on specific training.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's or Master's degree and 2+ years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CCNA strongly preferred
  • CCNP preferred

Special Instructions to Applicants:

This position must be available 24/7 in case of an emergency and may be asked to work during emergency situations including early, late, weekend, holiday hours and/or university closures such as during a hurricane; since UCF IT Telecommunications is considered a “mission essential” component of UCF’s operational capability. Additionally, a person in this position may be asked to work a flexible schedule that includes non-traditional hours to perform essential job functions that cannot be performed during “normal” business hours.
