Job Description:

Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to support their partnership with the Obantarla Corporation. This chemical process R&D role will explore fundamental chemical kinetics and thermodynamics that underpin small, modular processes to convert stranded gas to fungible, low-carbon derivatives.  The postdoctoral associate will design and execute experiments to measure critical reaction kinetic data, interpret that data in the context of lifecycle carbon intensity and process economics, and explore ways to intensify the process.

 

Responsibilities of this position may include bench-scale catalyst testing, process design/development, techno-economic analysis (TEA), life-cycle assessment (LCA), data science related to supply chain strategy, and supporting functions. Specific responsibilities may also include:

 

•        Supporting design and fabrication of bench-scale chemical process equipment;

•        Supporting design of pilot-scale and demonstration-scale process equipment;

•        Experimental catalyst testing, performance evaluation, and characterization;

•        Mechanical design of scientific apparatus, instrumentation, and controls;

•        Analyzing chemistry measurements for catalysts and products;

•        Analysis of large data sets to support LCA, TEA, and supply chain mapping.

Minimum Qualifications:

•        Ph.D. from an accredited institution in chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline;

•        Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety on the job;

•        Track record of working effectively in a fast-paced team environment;

•        Strong written and oral communication skills;

•        Willingness to learn new skills and be a flexible contributor.

Preferred Qualifications:

•        Experience with building bench-scale experimental apparatus;

•        Experience with chemical process simulation, CAD, or other engineering software;

•        Experience with sizing and costing of chemical process equipment;

•        Experience with data science and mapping tools;

•        Hands-on wet laboratory experience (3+ years).
