The University of Central Florida (UCF) is dedicated to increasing the prominence of its Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering Department (CECE). Applications are invited for a tenure-track assistant professor or associate professor position, with an anticipated start date of August 8, 2020. This position will be under the Fostering Smart Urban Transformation and Ubiquitous Resilience with Connected Infrastructure and Technology (FUTURe CITy) initiative housed in the Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering Department. The FUTURe CITy, a Smart City initiative at UCF, is a group of researchers who synergistically explore wide-ranging technological advances towards better serving urban residents. The interdisciplinary research environment, access to rapid metropolitan economic and population growth, and nexus of world-class simulation, space technology and tourism industries co-located in the Central Florida metro region provide unique opportunities to the potential faculty candidate. This initiative will provide a blueprint for urban policy makers and planners to optimally allocate limited resources while meeting sustainability and resilience goals and promoting social justice, equity, and fairness. We are especially interested in candidates with expertise in Smart City Infrastructure research domains including one or more of the following: 1) advanced sensing, structural functionality and sustainability, and energy-efficient buildings; 2) smart building design as the adaptation of the smart grid concept at the level of the building micro-grid with renewable energy sources; 3) decision-making frameworks and systems engineering for smart city operation based on sensor fusion, disaster metrology, physics-based models, machine learning, and user data; 4) real-time communications and data analytics for operation of infrastructure systems such as high-rise buildings, bridges, slopes and tunnels, and safety-critical facilities; and 5) development of sensing technologies for subsurface exploration, long-range non-contact sensing of large infrastructure, wireless communications for spatially-distributed infrastructure and lifelines. Other possible areas are development of autonomous robots and drones for deploying monitoring systems, and artificial intelligence and mixed-reality (augmented reality and virtual reality) for visualization, assessment, and decision making.


CECE houses active research laboratories, institutes, and university transportation centers, including large-scale structural testing, health monitoring, soil testing, and pavement materials laboratories. A unique opportunity exists for multidisciplinary researchers to work collaboratively with other well-renowned programs on campus including the Institute for Simulation and Training, Center for Research in Computer Vision, and the College of Medicine. Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. from an accredited institution by the time of appointment In a Smart City Infrastructure-related engineering field such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.


In order to obtain tenure, the selected candidate must have a demonstrated record of teaching, research and service commensurate with rank.

Preferred Qualifications:

The successful applicant will have either demonstrated, or shown a clear potential for, creative and independent research that would lead to strong extramurally-funded research and national/international recognition.  Preference will be given to candidates with postdoctoral or assistant professor experience.
