Work type: Faculty
Location: Main Campus (Orlando)
Categories: Engineering/Computer Science

Classification Title:

Associate Professor or Professor, Modeling and Simulation

Job Description:

The School of Modeling, Simulation, and Training (SMST) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) is accepting applications for a faculty position within the Modeling and Simulation (M&S) graduate programs, https://msgrad.ist.ucf.edu, to begin no later than August 2020. This is a tenured, 9-month faculty appointment to teach and conduct research. We are specifically seeking an individual with appropriate experience who would serve as the M&S graduate program director (initially for up to a 3-year term). While serving as graduate program director, the faculty member will hold the internal title of “Modeling and Simulation graduate program director,” and will have a reduced teaching load and receive a summer stipend. For a description of typical program director responsibilities, see https://graduate.ucf.edu/graduate-guide.

We seek applicants with a demonstrated record of rigorous research and scholarship, a record of external contract and grant funding, and excellence in teaching (especially mentoring and training graduate students) within topics relevant to M&S. Serving in this role requires demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across disciplinary boundaries with faculty and students in multiple departments across the school and the university. The successful candidate must have teaching and research experience and sufficient administrative experience to effectively lead the M&S graduate program.

We especially encourage applicants to apply who are excited at the prospect of interdisciplinary research and teaching that integrates research and creative projects in diverse areas of inquiry. The successful candidate will have expertise that enhances or complements our existing programs and will continue to grow their own research program. We are interested in faculty whose work focuses on the intersection of humans with technical systems, social systems, and society.

Candidates must demonstrate their potential to obtain external funding to support their scholarship and to publish peer-reviewed works in high-impact research outlets. Since this is a graduate only department and highly research intensive, candidates are expected to teach and mentor graduate students and more junior faculty. We especially encourage individuals from diverse technical backgrounds to apply. UCF is an equal opportunity institution dedicated to building a broadly diverse and inclusive faculty and staff. Minorities, women, and individuals from other under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

About the School of Modeling, Simulation, and Training at UCF:

Central Florida is the recognized world capital for M&S, with between $4B and $5B in procurement contracts issued each year in this domain. A very significant amount of funded research supports new technologies and techniques in support of M&S. The graduate programs in the School of Modeling, Simulation, and Training are the largest and most diverse programs of their kind in the nation and are exceptionally well positioned to lead in this growing and critical profession by training educators, research professionals, and senior leadership. This is an opportunity to join SMST, help guide the M&S graduate programs and become a member of the highly productive faculty.

SMST is home to a dynamic, interdisciplinary faculty, internationally recognized for their cutting-edge research in M&S. The school emphasizes interdisciplinary research, and robust partnerships across a diverse range of stakeholders. SMST faculty have appointments in a wide range of departments including business, chemistry, computer science, history, industrial engineering, interactive media, medicine, nursing, philosophy, physics, and psychology. Projects involving cross-disciplinary teams are actively pursued and encouraged within SMST, across UCF, and with partners around the world.

The M&S graduate programs have produced approximately 600 graduate degrees to date, with more than 100 students enrolled in the programs at any given time. The M&S curricula address both the theoretical and practical aspects of modeling, simulation, and training, and our alumni have achieved positions in academia, industry, and government. More information on the course offerings in the program can be found in the graduate catalog under Modeling and Simulation (www.graduatecatalog.ucf.edu).
