Job Description:

The Prodigy Lab at the Institute for Simulation & Training (IST) and the School of Modeling, Simulation & Training (SMST) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invite applications for the position of research associate in nuclear human performance operations.


The primary function of the position is to conduct human performance research as it pertains to Workload, Fatigue, Nuclear Power Plant Operations, Human System Interface (HSI), Physiological Measures, Training Effectiveness Evaluation, Augmented Cognition, Unmanned Systems, Cyber Security, and Simulations. This position requires someone with expertise in developing, managing, and conducting experiments with human participants. An additional responsibility is to supervise undergraduate and graduate research associates to achieve quality research findings under deadlines and to advance the knowledge base of the students. 


Types of Tasks:

•             Conducting extensive and exhaustive literature reviews;

•             Statistical modeling;

•             Publishing theory and results and/or presenting studies at conferences;

•             Editing papers internally and externally for journals and conferences;

•             Attending and networking at conferences, workshops, and project meetings that are local and require travel;

•             Research and experimental design/development (both laboratory and field) ;

•             Management of undergraduate and graduate research assistants;

•             Proposal writing;

•             Generation of creative solutions for research simulation development.

Minimum Qualifications:

A doctoral degree in Human Factors or a relevant field (e.g., Human Factors, Psychology, Experimental Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Modeling and Simulation) from an accredited institution is required. Applicants are expected to have completed their doctorate degree by the start date of this position, which is Spring 2020. Specific skills required are experience with conducting human research, knowledge of human factors principles including theory and application, a passion for human performance research, operations in nuclear domain, HSI, unmanned systems, augmented cognition and cyber security, a desire for enhancing user-experience, and understanding of the contribution of psychophysiological measures. Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary for reporting results (ability to write in APA style is crucial) and communicating with team members and the research community. Required experience includes a strong research methods and statistics background.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in research in nuclear power plant operations, workload, HSI, physiological assessment, unmanned systems, and simulation. Familiarity with topics in stress, fatigue, workload, cognition, perception, and personality is desirable. Experience working with interdisciplinary teams is valuable. Previous presentations, publications and experience with simulation development is expected.
