Job Description:

Provide support to the implementation of a new cloud based data management storage system at the Arecibo Observatory. Perform cataloging and indexing of data archives, and support new data uploads into the platform.

  • Support implementation of data migration strategy for obsolescent storage media.

  • Staging data for transport to archiving sites.

  • Creating and maintaining a web-based search tool for locating archival data.

  • Develop/deploy updates to facility web pages.

  • Implement new technology initiatives across the site, including data management, networking, web development.

  • Design, develop and implement database systems based on customer requirements. Optimize existing database systems for performance efficiency.

  • Prepare design specifications and functional documentations for assigned database projects.

  • Perform space management and capacity planning for database systems. Develop database tables and dictionaries.

  • Support implementation of new software/systems at the facility.

  • Ensure data quality and integrity in databases.

  • Create complex functions, scripts, stored procedures and triggers to support application development.

  • Participate in database design and architecture to support application development projects.

  • Test databases and perform bug fixes.Troubleshoot database related issues in a timely fashion.

  • Develop security procedures to protect databases from unauthorized usage.

  • Evaluate existing database and recommend improvements for performance efficiency

  • Helping observers with data management and retrieval tasks.

  • Securely handling and storing disk and tape media.

  • Other duties as assigned.

The Arecibo Observatory, located near the town of Arecibo, Puerto Rico, is a world-class observational facility allowing for cutting-edge space research and education. The observatory hosts one of the world’s largest and most powerful single-dish radio/radar telescopes, and gathers information about planets, moons, asteroids and comets. The Arecibo Observatory is currently operated and managed by University of Central Florida in partnership with Sistema Ana G. Mendez Universidad Metropolitana (UMET) and Yang Enterprises, Inc under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation (NSF). UCF is seeking to hire two (2) Software Engineer I positions.

Department:

Office of Research

Work Schedule:

Monday – Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Schedule may vary as required.

Type of Appointment:

Regular

Expected Salary:

$56,030 to Negotiable

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's or Master's degree and 0+ years of relevant experience.

Additional Minimum Requirements:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Systems / Software Engineering/Information Technology or related field.

  • 1-3 yrs. programming with high-level scripting languages in Linux/Unix environment

  • 2-4 yrs. database and web programming,

  • 2-3 yrs. programming cloud-based applications

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure Cloud System a plus.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Solid knowledge of object-oriented programming and design.

  • Experience with multithreading, real-time systems and socket programming.

  • Interest/experience with Blockchain Technology.
