Postdoctoral Scholar, Research to Integrate Hydrogen Production and 'Consumption with the Electric Grid'

Administrative Title:

No Administrative Function

Job Description:

FSEC Energy Research Center (, also known as the Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC), is located in Cocoa, Florida, and associated with the University of Central Florida (UCF). Since 1975, FSEC has conducted fundamental and systems-level research in solar energy, hydrogen production, fuel cells, energy storage, electric vehicles, and energy-efficient buildings.

FSEC is seeking two postdoctoral researchers to participate in a U.S. Department of Energy Research project that will investigate the use of hydrogen production and consumption as a grid asset.  This project will develop economic dispatch signals for electrolyzers and fuel cells to improve grid operations, particularly in high PV penetration scenarios.  Example dispatch scenarios include:

* smoothing steep ramp rates during rapid solar fluctuations;

* avoiding low-load cycling of conventional generators;

* avoiding or deferring infrastructure upgrades for large-scale vehicular electrification (e.g. transit bus);

* dispatching of hydrogen in fuel cells to support peak load;

* integration of hydrogen as an asset for micro-grid applications.

Research activities will be conducted at the FSEC site in Cocoa, FL, as well as at the host utility site, Orlando Utilities Commission, located in Orlando, FL.
