Job Description:

The Network Architect II is responsible for expert-level Wide Area Network (WAN) and Data Center (DC) strategic and tactical planning, network standards and guidelines for network platforms/hardware to support data, voice, video, email, and security. Develops the strategy and direction for the university WAN/DC using current and emerging technologies. Translates business requirements into network or process designs. Tactical planning involves the establishment of annual (up to 5 year) projections for WAN/DC network refreshments. Assists when asked with the configuration and maintenance of routers, and switches for the network systems. Develops troubleshooting procedures and designs resolution scripts.

Additional job duties/responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Must have a thorough understanding of LAN/WAN/WLAN network technologies. Internet protocols and services, such as TCP, UDP, BGP, MPLS, IS-IS, IPV4, IPV6, IPsec/IKE, SMTP, and UNIX are fundamental to success in this position.
  • Lead development and implementation of enterprise-wide strategies, architectures, designs and assessments. Develop written documents on WAN/DC network standards, which is reviewed and updated/modified annually or when needed.
  • On an annual basis, develops the tactical plans that translate to actions taken. These include but are not limited to recommendations on hardware/software refreshes, recommended hardware/service enhancements, end-of-life triggers & alerts, etc. The annual projections will include budgetary estimates.
  • This position will trial, test, and confirm, via proof of concept, new network hardware/software before recommending the deployment of such technology. Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of network technologies, analyzes applicability to the university’s network enhancements, and updates the standards annually for deployment.
  • Provide high-level network expertise and assistance to other Telecommunications’ engineers in resolving complex issues.
  • Stay abreast of how technology infrastructures are currently impacting and driving competitors.
  • Plan and develop network automation to increase operational efficiency.
  • Possess a professional, solutions-based 'team player' attitude and excellent presentation skills.
  • Be resourceful, work independently, and be self-motivated and proactive in approach to problem solving and customer service.
  • Write functional requirements/specifications documents.
  • Possess a hands-on configuration knowledge of networking technology and management platforms. Perform network troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose common network problems.
  • Assess network utilization using monitoring tools. Develop and communicate recommendations for addressing capacity needs.
  • Position will require "on call" schedule and part of the COOP team for essential university services.
  • Ability to climb a ladder and lift up to 50 pounds. In addition carry hand or networking tools that may weigh up to 50 pounds.
  • Other duties as assigned, to include availability for conferences and training which may require multiple evenings out of town.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's or Master's degree and 2+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CCNP level certifications.
  • Cisco DevNet certifications.
