Work type: Postdoctoral Associate

Classification Title:

Postdoctoral Scholar, Human-AI Teaming in Aeronautics

Administrative Title:

No Administrative Function

Job Description:

A team of researchers from the University of Central Florida (UCF) working in conjunction with the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) is seeking a highly motivated and forward-thinking postdoctoral scholar to assist in conducting multidisciplinary research on a sponsored ONR project on human-AI teaming in aeronautics.

Candidates interested in the position should have a doctoral degree related to controls, operations research, or a similar discipline, and ideally a background in aeronautics and/or air transportation systems.  The primary research duties will involve using machine-learning techniques to build dynamic models that estimate and predict the current and future cognitive state and actions of minimally trained onboard human operators when interacting with an AI aircraft piloting system.  Candidates must have expertise in developing custom closed-loop simulation models using Matlab, Python, or another formal programming language.  Examples of custom simulations include discrete and continuous-time models in air transportation or feedback control systems.  Specifically, we are NOT INTERESTED in candidates who only have experience working with simulation engines (e.g. Simulink, Arena, AnyLogic, Simio, etc.).

The selected candidate will be expected to engage with research teams at Georgia Tech working in the areas of human factors and formal methods.

The position is available for up to 2 years and is targeted at researchers interested in aggressively pursuing a faculty position. The UCF faculty lead on the project is dedicated to working with the postdoctoral scholar in establishing themselves as an independent researcher. This includes writing proposals as a co-PI, leading a small research team, teaching opportunities, and exploring other research projects in the domain areas of air transportation, homeland security, education analytics and data mining, and manufacturing cobots. The selected candidate will be encouraged to network with other faculty at UCF, Georgia Tech, and elsewhere. The position will be based in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems (IEMS) at UCF, located in Orlando; however, there will be opportunities for the candidate to travel to Georgia Tech in Atlanta to observe human-subject experiments and to design decision-support systems enabling the human-subject experiments.

Position to begin immediately with a target start date in Fall 2021.
