Job Description:

This position is responsible for operating machine tools to manufacture, engineering/reverse engineer parts. Supports research, instructional, and Senior Design activities of faculty, staff and students through design/fabrication services. Proficient with Solid Works in modeling and making blue prints. Maintains quality and safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.

Other job responsibilities include:

  • Operate, understand, and maintain all current and planned machining equipment, both metrology and prototyping equipment and tools in the lab, inclusive of lathes, mills, saws, Computer Numerical Control (CNC), manual devices, and other equipment in the shop.

  • Utilize Computer-Aided Design/Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) tools.

  • Adhere to safety guidelines and train staff, facility, faculty students and any other employee off the college to use machines, meteorology and prototyping equipment.

  • Provide guidance to lab customers who request support for design and materials selection. Documents actions by completing production and quality logs.

  • Interaction on an individual and /team basis to deliver high-quality machine parts, and designs based on sketches, verbal, detailed drawings, 3-D models, or other concepts.

  • Maintains continuity among team members by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs to maximize productivity and minimize machine downtime.

  • Maintain a collegial work environment that fosters teamwork and respect amongst the various employees in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) department and beyond.

  • Capable and required to step into the training role assisting students at the beginning and advanced concepts of manufacturing.

  • Foster a safe working environment consistent with UCF Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) policies. Responsible for students in the lab in accordance with all safety practices of manufacturing. Training and teaching staff, professors, student and any other individual in the lab of all safety protocols.

  • Work with supervisory staff to maintain inventory of required lab materials, tooling, and equipment.

  • Maintain equipment and make any minor adjust/fixes to machinery as needed filling out maintenance log. Follows manufactures instruction, troubleshoots and notify appropriate contact if out of scope to make repairs to the machinery. Follows all lock-out-tag processes.

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.

  • Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Monday - Friday; 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Schedule may vary as required.

Expected Salary:

$48,722 to Negotiable

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of an approved machinist apprenticeship program and 2+ years of relevant experience; or a high school diploma and 4+ years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite.

  • Ability to multi-task and meet given deadlines/time frames, interpret/develop blueprints, engineering graphics, and technical drawings, including dimensioning tolerances and surface finishes.

  • Ability to comprehend concepts, verbal and written communication skills, handle a fast pace while maintaining good working relationships with shop customers and department/college faculty/staff.

  • Solidworks experience is a plus.

  • Experience as a machinist operating drilling and milling machines including modern equipment, such as CNC and pertinent software is preferred.

  • Preference to Journeyman Card & Tool and Die Maker.

  • Previous experience in an academic setting a plus.
