The Opportunity:
The Facilities and Business Operations Department is seeking to hire an Engineer II. This role is responsible for designing, programming, troubleshooting, and commissioning building automation systems (BAS) that control HVAC, lighting, and other building systems to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency. The position also performs testing, commissioning, retro-commissioning, repair, and programming of BAS and related electronic equipment essential to campus HVAC operations. In addition, the Engineer II provides specialized expertise in direct digital controls, airflow, hydronics, and building control techniques, applying expert knowledge of BAS controls concepts, practices, and theories to ensure building systems operate reliably, efficiently, and in support of energy conservation goals.
Responsibilities:
Design, build, and program databases for new and existing building automation systems (BAS).
Develop, test, and implement control programs for multiple vendor BAS platforms.
Ensure all designs meet required specifications and performance standards.
Perform regular maintenance, troubleshooting, and improvements to ensure reliable system operation.
Maintain detailed documentation of automation processes, including design, installation, and maintenance records.
Monitor BAS network reliability using tools such as Optigo Networks and Wireshark; resolve any issues promptly.
Proactively calibrate advanced digital control systems to enhance operational performance and efficiency.
Develop proposals and recommendations for building automation modernization projects.
Analyze system performance using trend data and Facilities Performance Indicators (FPIs) to develop solutions.
Complete hardware and software updates to improve BAS graphics, programming, databases, and networks.
Provide technical support and data to HVAC/Controls teams and other university departments.
Identify and resolve technical system issues, including programming sequence deficiencies.
Collaborate with automation contractors on interface changes to existing systems.
Respond to HVAC and Controls service requests, including comfort complaints and indoor air quality concerns.
Create proactive work orders to maintain campus BAS functionality, ensuring timely resolution of urgent and life safety issues.
Partner with Engineering teams to develop solutions for obsolete BAS systems.
Support Controls Specialists with troubleshooting and provide leadership, training, and guidance as needed.
Contribute programming expertise to energy retro-commissioning projects, HMI visualization, and network health improvements.
Provide project management for in-house controls projects, including installation and commissioning.
Update Facilities Condition Assessment (FCA) data annually for control system assets.
Collaborate with campus partners (Auxiliary Services, DSO, Athletics) to deliver data, metrics, and reporting on automation systems.
Work with senior leadership to optimize energy utilization across the university.
Provide application engineering support, product research, and technical documentation to staff, project managers, and contractors.
Support other areas within Utilities and Engineering Services as needed.
Administer and develop UCF’s Building Automation Specifications; educate stakeholders, create tools, review design documents, and support project teams.
Facilitate integrated design processes by sharing best practices and lessons learned.
Report regularly on the status and performance of BAS upgrades, ensuring compliance with university standards.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree and 2+ years of relevant experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219(6).
Preferred Qualifications:
2+ years of previous experience in BAS programming, graphics creation, editing, diagnostics, and troubleshooting.
Experience in the repair and maintenance of digital building control systems or HVAC/R systems.
Extensive experience as an HVAC Controls Technician with in-depth knowledge of digital building control systems in large, modern commercial or government facilities, focusing on operations and maintenance.
Advanced understanding of HVAC controls theory and application, including the review, design, implementation, operation, and testing of sequences of operation.
Proficient in the use of Building Management System (BMS) software platforms such as Siemens Desigo, Trane Tracer Ensemble, enteliWEB, and webCTRL.
Strong computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and design software such as AutoCAD and /or Visio.
Ability to remain professional, assertive, and decisive when addressing sensitive or challenging situations involving customers and colleagues.
Experience with Integrated Workplace Management Systems (IWMS).
Apply general knowledge of applicable information technology and the impact of work with other systems and programs.
Knowledge of HVAC systems, boilers, chillers, air compressors, fans, and pumps.
Skilled in the use and safety of hand and power tools and machines.
Ability to read construction drawings and specifications.
Ability to read and understand printed processes, circuits, and electrical schematics.
Ability to troubleshoot electronic and pneumatic controls.
Special Instructions to the Applicants:
The anticipated salary range for this position is $64,518 to $88,713. The final salary will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, and internal equity considerations.
Position requires a valid Class E driver’s license. The position may involve driving to various locations on and off campus to conduct University business.
