The Opportunity:
The Housekeeping Department within Facilities and Business Operations is seeking to hire a Custodial Specialist II on the UCF Downtown Campus to help maintain a clean, safe, and efficient campus environment. This role focuses on both routine and project-based cleaning, including deep cleaning, floor and carpet care, light pressure washing, and supporting work requests through the Integrated Work Management System (IWMS). The position also involves assisting with training new staff and entails strong attention to detail, independence, and technical skills.
Responsibilities:
Supervise Custodial Specialist I and II staff in daily cleaning and maintenance tasks. Inspect work to ensure buildings meet Quality Assurance audit standards and all tasks are completed on time. Record inspection results, address discrepancies, and follow up with employee performance reviews as needed.
Plan, coordinate, and adjust labor, materials, and other resources to maintain productivity and quality.
Monitor and assess supply levels; prepare ordering requests for manager approval.
Perform cleaning tasks as needed, including: Cleaning and restocking restrooms, sinks, showers, and other facilities; Vacuuming carpets, moving and replacing furniture, and spot cleaning; Sweeping, mopping, and maintaining floors and stairwells; Removing trash and recycling; Dusting, wiping, and scrubbing surfaces, walls, and equipment; Cleaning windows, glass, and entry doors; Shampooing and extracting carpets or upholstery; Stripping, waxing, and buffing floors (tile, VCT, etc.).
Conduct and document cleanliness audits following the housekeeping audit program.
Conduct quality checks to ensure compliance with UCF standards and procedures.
Ensure all life safety and urgent work orders are completed promptly.
Maintain knowledge of departmental operations, university standards, and customer expectations to guide staff and validate work.
Attend and participate in university, departmental, and unit meetings.
Review and manage work orders assigned to the custodial zone. Maintain accurate data in the IWMS system (work status, costs, dates, images, actions taken, etc.).
Develop and share work schedules to coordinate with staff, vendors, inspectors, and other stakeholders.
Provide and schedule safety training for staff; ensure safe work practices are followed. Report and document all accidents, injuries, and unsafe conditions; process related claims as required.
Coordinate with stakeholders to schedule utility or equipment shutdowns and area closures for projects.
Track estimated vs. actual hours for scheduled work and maintain productivity standards.
Analyze and prioritize work backlogs, assigning resources and timelines for completion.
Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisory leadership.
Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of 9th grade and 2+ years of relevant experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219(6).
Preferred Qualifications:
2+ years of previous work experience in a custodial or similar role with a focus on floor care.
Knowledge of floor care process for hard surfaces, including pressure washing, stripping, and restorative practices.
Ability to use small and large tools for essential tasks (floor care equipment, mop/mop bucket, dust mop, broom, scrub pad, radio, etc.).
Proficiency with standard office software applications and devices for work order systems (IWMS).
Able to communicate in conversational English to work effectively with customers and team members, operate electronic equipment (iPad for Integrated Work Management Systems PM checkpoints), comprehend standard safety procedures, and utilize telecommunication devices.
Adaptable to work assignments and flexible for urgent trade requirements.
Understanding of safety guidelines and able to use approved chemicals by Environmental Health & Safety to perform essential job functions.
Capable of operating a fleet vehicle as necessary.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Demonstrated capabilities in interpersonal skills, memory, attention to detail, calculation, reading, evaluating, comprehension, and organizing.
Health Assessment Required:
UCF policy requires completion and passing of a physical exam for this position.
Special Instructions to the Applicants:
The anticipated hourly rate for this position is $18.00.
Position requires a valid Class E driver’s license. The position may involve driving to various locations on and off campus to conduct University business.
