The Opportunity:

The Maintenance Department at Facilities and Business Operations seeks an experienced HVAC Specialist III to support campus buildings, ensuring a safe, functional, clean, and efficient learning environment. This role focuses on advanced HVAC maintenance, troubleshooting, and systems optimization.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform advanced diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration systems, including chillers, heat pumps, and DX systems.

  • Conduct preventative and predictive maintenance to ensure continuous operation and avoid interruptions.

  • Calibrate and repair electric, electronic, and pneumatic controls to maintain design conditions.

  • Diagnose and address refrigeration malfunctions, repair compressors, and handle emergency HVAC repairs.

  • Use BAS controls to troubleshoot and enhance HVAC performance.

  • Propose system enhancements and ensure compliance with EPA, state, and local regulations.

  • Manage and prioritize HVAC work orders, addressing urgent requests and air quality concerns promptly.

  • Collaborate with junior HVAC staff on complex repairs and planned maintenance for boilers, chillers, pumps, and related equipment.

  • Oversee technical projects to maintain critical campus assets and ensure effective internal controls.

  • Support HVAC specifications development, including stakeholder education, design review, and standards compliance.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of an approved apprenticeship program in heating, ventilation and/or air conditioning; or a high school diploma and 4 years of relevant experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience performing advanced preventative and predictive maintenance on complex HVAC systems, including chillers, boilers, and BAS-controlled equipment.

  • EPA Certification or equivalent training in HVAC and refrigeration maintenance, including safe handling and disposal of refrigerants.

  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing a wide range of HVAC components, such as air systems, compressors, pneumatic controls, and electronic controls.

  • Demonstrated expertise in analyzing refrigerant charges and pressures to optimize system performance.

  • Proven leadership abilities, including experience in delegating tasks, training, and motivating team members from various backgrounds.

  • Experience within a university or large corporate environment.

  • Familiarity with various computer programs, including Microsoft Office and the Integrated Work Management System (IWMS) or similar software.

  • Effective communication skills in English in order to: Work effectively with customers; Operate and demonstrate the functions of the electronic equipment; Utilize telecommunication devices. Bilingual ability is a plus to facilitate communication within various teams and effectively serve a broader range of clients.

  • Ability to work in outdoor conditions and within differing climates, in confined spaces, and at different elevations.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, collaborating with individuals from varied backgrounds and experiences.

Health Assessment Required:  

UCF policy requires completion and passing of a physical exam for this position.

Special Instructions to the Applicants:

The anticipated salary range for this position is $26.83 - $35.89. The final salary will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, and internal equity considerations.

Position requires a valid Class E driver’s license. The position may involve driving to various locations on and off campus to conduct University business.

May be required to participate in respiratory, medical examination, and training in use of respirators.
