Welcome to the UCF Department of Chemistry in beautiful and exciting Central Florida! We have a growing and diverse population of faculty and students carrying out research in five broad areas of study: materials, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, forensic chemistry, and chemistry education research. Our faculty collaborate with the National Center of Forensic Science, the Nanoscience and Technology Center, the College of Optics and Photonics, the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the College of Community Innovation and Education, thus preparing our students for complex problem solving in an interdisciplinary world.

The Opportunity:

UCF's Chemistry Department with the College of Sciences is seeking a Laboratory Coordinator I to support our organic chemistry teaching labs. In this role, you will serve as the primary point of contact for lab operations, collaborating with Instructors of Record (IoR), graduate teaching assistants (GTAs), laboratory technicians, and stockroom assistants to ensure students have the materials and equipment needed to achieve their learning goals.

Responsibilities:

• Coordinate with Instructors of Record (IoR) to obtain syllabi, materials, and equipment lists in preparation for each semester of instruction.

• Collaborate with instructors and colleagues to maintain inventory levels and adapt lab experiments or techniques as curricular needs evolve.

• Perform daily maintenance of teaching labs, preparation areas, and stockroom to ensure a safe and functional learning environment.

• Set up labs each day with appropriate chemicals, supplies, and functioning equipment; monitor stockroom inventory and restock and reorder as needed.

• Facilitate pre-lab meetings with graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) to review weekly lesson objectives, techniques, safety hazards, and waste disposal procedures prior to each lab session.

• Identify recurring lab challenges and establish best practices; provide hands-on training and support to GTAs as needed.

• Handle and dispose of hazardous materials in compliance with applicable safety regulations.

• Coordinate hazardous waste pickups with Environmental Health & Safety; conduct periodic lab inspections to identify and resolve compliance issues.

• Coordinate with the Instrumentation Specialist to facilitate training and repair of scientific equipment; assist with troubleshooting and routine maintenance.

• Develop user guides for instrumentation as needed.

• Coordinate with colleagues to maintain continuity of teaching lab support during periods of absence.

• Provide training and task direction to student assistants as needed.

• Assist with special projects, including lab decontamination and relocation of equipment or materials.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Bachelor's or Master's degree and 0+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219(6).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's or Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a closely related field.

• Foundational knowledge of organic chemistry theory, standard laboratory techniques, and common apparatus such as rotary evaporators, FTIR, and UV/Vis spectrophotometers, gained in a professional, research, or instructional setting.

• Experience supporting teaching laboratories, including training or guiding students, graduate assistants, or support staff.

• Knowledge of laboratory safety standards, EHS protocols, and proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals.

• Experience maintaining laboratory inventories, stockroom organization, or instructional documentation such as SOPs or user guides.

Special Instructions to the Applicants:

• The anticipated hourly rate for this position is $17.64 - $22.03 ($36,841 - $46,000 annually). The final rate will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, and internal equity considerations.
