The School of Visual Arts and Design (SVAD) is a multifaceted unit at the University of Central Florida, housed in the College of Arts and Humanities. The various tracks, degrees, and opportunities facilitate experimental and groundbreaking research while offering students the essential foundations necessary to be innovative and effective designers and artists.
SVAD serves students majoring in animation, architecture, art history, photography, graphic design, and studio arts including painting, drawing, printmaking sculpture, and ceramics. SVAD’s alumni include Fulbright scholars, resident artists, art historians, and curators and are employed by Pixar, Electronic Arts, Scholastic, Universal Creative, and others. Our faculty has an array of specializations and are current on the latest industry standards, software and practices because they remain current in their respective disciplines and can offer students real-world insight into their future careers.
The Opportunity:
The School of Visual Arts and Design (SVAD) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Machine Shop Coordinator to support the daily operations of our fabrication laboratories. This role involves hands-on assistance in areas such as the woodshop, sculpture, metalworks, ceramics, 3D design, and other assigned facilities.
The Machine Shop Coordinator will work closely with the SVAD Machine Shop Manager to:
Supervise and maintain the woodshop and related lab spaces.
Clean, repair, and ensure the proper functioning of tools and equipment.
Provide instructional support to students, both individually and in small groups, on the safe and effective use of specialized equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
Guide students through various aspects of fabrication, craftsmanship, and creative problem-solving.
The ideal candidate is a proactive, safety-conscious professional with strong technical skills and a genuine enthusiasm for supporting student learning in a dynamic, creative environment.
Classification Title: Laboratory Coordinator II
Responsibilities:
Assist students through facets of fabrication, craftsmanship and problem solving.
Assist faculty in open lab hours during normal operating hours.
Ensure University's fire, tool, and material safety standards are communicated and met in all SVAD classrooms, studios, and shops.
Implement inventory control system for SVAD to make sure necessary classroom materials are available for students at all times for SVAD Woodshop and throughout these fabrication spaces.
Responsible for surplus submissions and tracking, and will serve as property custodian.
Recommend measures to improve woodshop and fabrication procedures.
Submit work orders to UCF Facilities as needed for higher level repairs and projects.
Maintain organized storerooms and labs; assemble custom shelves, racks, and tool caddies needed for classrooms, art display and storage.
Assist hanging and moving art for SVAD community events including Gallery openings, Art Knight and UCF Celebrates the Arts.
Operate in a flexible schedule to allow students to complete their work on time.
This position will involve occasional night or weekend hours.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree and 2+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in an educational setting, such as a high school, college, or university.
Hands-on experience in a woodshop or fabrication laboratory environment.
Experience in ceramics studio operations, including clay mixing and the operation of gas and electric kilns.
Familiarity with sculpture techniques, including mold making and related fabrication processes.
