The Opportunity
With the rapid successful growth of the University of Central Florida’s (UCF) Department of Medicine, Dermatology will now become its own Division to further our academic missions of education, research and high quality state-of-the-art clinical care. We seek an accomplished dermatologist with a strong vision for dermatology excellence to serve as the founding Division Chief with major leadership roles in the College of Medicine (COM) and the UCF Faculty Practice. The successful candidate will be at, or eligible for hire at, the associate professor or professor rank in the clinical or tenure tracks. The Chief will be charged with the goals to:
Grow the dermatology clinical service lines by the recruitment of multiple general dermatology and Mohs micrographic surgery faculty for our UCF Health Faculty Practice. The clinics are state-of-the-art facilities that include advanced Mohs technical and laboratory resources. The goal is to collaborate with faculty in other COM specialties to establish clinical programs of excellence that have impact for, and well-beyond, our local communities. The Chief will also work with clinic leadership to optimize the day-to-day operational performance of the Division’s faculty in delivering superior medical care with the highest quality, safety, ethical standards and financial practices.
Expand clinical and translational research with a focus on hypothesis-driven investigator-initiated externally funded studies, in addition to sponsored trials. This will be facilitated by a robust human research team which has offices in each of our primary clinic sites and extensive logistic administrative support. A goal is to further research pursuits aligned with our other COM disciplines, specifically with a focus on oncology and immunology research; the latter will be facilitated by clinical and laboratory resources at our UCF Cancer Center. Another aim is collaborative research and technology development with our faculty colleagues in the College of Optics and Photonics (e.g., for high-resolution imaging, laser therapeutics) and the College of Engineering and Computer Science.
Start a Dermatology Residency Program, which will be facilitated by planning that has already been underway including multiple training sites (e.g., the local VA Medical Center, private practitioners), dermatopathology and pediatrics.
Enrich our current medical school dermatology curriculum with new faculty for didactics and clinical rotations. The successful candidate will also arrange for the Division to participate in the current advising program for students seeking dermatology residencies.
Work with the Internal Medicine Residency and Fellowship Program Directors to incorporate dermatology rotations into the clinic schedule.
Establish co-specialty clinics such as dermatology-rheumatology for the purposes of patient care, learner education, and clinical or translational research.
Provide mentorship and other career guidance for COM’s trainees and faculty.
Provide leadership, personal and Divisional service to the Department, College and University by such activities as committee participation and a commitment to supporting our community.
Minimum Qualifications:
All candidates must have an M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited university and be board certified in dermatology.
Three years of postgraduate clinical practice in an academic institution.
Previous experience building, leading or expanding a program, division, institute, other clinical service group or equivalent responsibility within an academic or academically affiliated organization.
Experience participating as faculty in a Dermatology Residency Program and/or Mohs Micrographic Surgery Fellowship Program.
Experience in clinical practice administration, management, or related academic leadership with demonstrable strong organization and process management skills.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
The candidate’s scholarly background and experience must be commensurate with the faculty rank for which the application is submitted.
To be eligible to be hired as a tenured associate professor or professor of medicine upon hire, the selected candidate must have a demonstrated record teaching, research, and service commensurate with a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor of medicine.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience as Program Director for a Dermatology Residency Program.
Experience as Program Director for a Mohs Microsurgery Fellowship Program.
Experience in dermatology didactic or clinical instruction at the medical school level.
Experience at the leadership level for the medical school dermatology curriculum.
Leadership experience as a director for a busy general dermatology practice.
Consistent track record of research and peer-reviewed publications in dermatology.
Demonstrable experience or specific interest in collaborations for the development of dermatology technology and research in the fields of optics and photonics for both diagnostics and therapeutics, such as: high-resolution in vivo skin microscopy, Mohs tissue imaging and analytics, photoacoustic imaging, photobiomodulation, photodynamic therapy, and laser treatments.
