The Opportunity:
The Laboratory Technician III position supports assigned teaching laboratories by:
(1) supporting instructors of assigned teaching laboratories by maintaining inventory of equipment, supplies, chemicals and live specimens; maintaining compliance to university safety and animal welfare regulations; maintaining daily laboratory set-up; presetting and closing labs at the end of the day; and modifying laboratory exercises as needed; and
(2) training undergraduate laboratory assistants in compliance to university safety and animal welfare regulations and daily support of teaching laboratories.
Responsibilities:
Prepare all materials needed for assigned teaching laboratories to run smoothly (supplies, equipment, solutions, live specimens). Provide instruction on the proper use of materials to Instructors and Undergraduate Laboratory Assistants. Maintain laboratory set-up throughout the day. Ensure laboratories are preset and safely closed down at the end of the day. Clean teaching labs and store equipment.
Maintain or update teaching laboratory manuals and standard operating procedures. Assist Instructors with other teaching laboratories upon request.
Train Undergraduate Laboratory Assistants in compliance to university safety and animal welfare regulations and in the preparation, setup, and breakdown of all assigned teaching laboratory exercises.
Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies used in assigned teaching laboratories. Repair/maintain equipment or research and recommend purchase of new equipment and modification/replacement of current equipment. Submit order requests to supervisor.
Maintain compliance with university safety and animal welfare regulations including: monitoring laboratories to confirm that EHS and IACUC regulations are implemented; ensuring that safe waste generation practices are being followed; coordinating hazardous waste pickup; working with EHS staff to address safety concerns in a timely manner.
Assist Faculty and Teaching Assistants in modifying/updating laboratory exercises in teaching laboratories.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 4+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience working within a laboratory environment.
Skilled in aseptic techniques to maintain sterile conditions and prevent contamination.
Experienced in managing and maintaining laboratory supply inventory.
Hands-on experience in plant or specimen care.
Health Assessment Required:
The UCF policy requires completion and passing of a physical exam for this position.
