College of Medicine (COM) - Office of Student Affairs:
This office supports students throughout their medical education, from recruitment, application and admission through graduation and beyond, by providing outstanding student-centered services in the core functions of admissions, counseling and wellness, student financial services, student records, student academic support, and student services, while collaborating with faculty and staff in the development and education of exemplary physicians.
The department assist students making decisions about career and professional development, including securing a residency position for graduate medical education. This office is also responsible for advising students about research opportunities, internship and externship possibilities consistent with their career goals, and guiding students in meeting the demands of medical education (time management, stress reduction, and preparation for clinical education, among others).
The Opportunity:
The Director of Career Services reports to the Associate Dean for Students and is responsible for supporting the arc of career advising and professional development services for UCF medical students. The Director of Career Services plans, operates, and assesses the career advising system within Student Affairs. This position also monitors and manages changes and specialty-specific updates to the residency match process, a critical important component of the medical education program which significantly impacts school reputation and admissions recruitment processes.
Responsibilities:
Develops, manages, analyzes, and evaluates the MD-specific career services program. Monitors and manages changes and specialty-specific updates to the residency match process, and communicates these changes to students and faculty advisors.
Implements the longitudinal advising program required for development of individual student medical career plans, serving as the lead career advisor for UCF COM.
Provides 1:1 career counseling and advice for students and develops individual academic and career goals.
Coaches students and provides them with resources and training to prepare their residency application materials (e.g., personal statements, CV, application).
Provides individualized review of application materials for accuracy, content, and strategy based on a student's strengths and weaknesses.
Assists students with timelines and key activities in accordance with MD-specific career services and residency application deadlines, policies, and procedures.
Oversees the mock interview process to prepare students for residency interviews, and conducts mock interviews to prepare students.
Analyzes and maintains student competitiveness data and manages a list of students at risk for not matching.
In collaboration with the Dean of Students, prepares appropriate intervention strategies for at risk students.
Monitors student interview offers throughout the residency match season.
Develops specialty-specific advising resources including recommended electives, research opportunities, application strategy, match statistics, and interview planning.
Manages career advising portion of the Visiting Students Learning Opportunity platform (VSLO), helping all medical students manage the offerings for away rotations or “audition” rotations at prospective residency programs.
Provides students information on the full range of career options, considering their interests and where they are in the medical education continuum.
Responsible for presenting information to students accurately and proactively to assist in decision-making on medical specialty areas, residencies, and career options.
Refers students to relevant career planning information and resources.
Recruits speakers and manages lecture series for career exploration.
Administers the pre-clinical career advising program through the AAMC Careers in Medicine platform and UCF's Careers Curriculum for MD students, which is a core part of the MD educational program.
Researches resources and equips students with information on trends in the residency match process and in response to student-specific requests (e.g., medical specialty areas, general residency program requirements, career options).
Collaborates with academic faculty and education chairs in development of activities related to career exploration and mentoring activities.
Identifies and develops relationships with physicians to expand career advising activities. Provides longitudinal training to faculty advisors to ensure all remain up-to-date with the dynamic residency application process.
Communicates with Associate Dean for Students as well as faculty advisors in support of students at risk for not matching.
Serves as administrator for the relevant application services for residency (i.e., ResidencyCAS, ERAS, etc) and the Match (i.e., NRMP, the SF Match, the AUA Match, the Military Match).
Timely completion of all university and college required trainings and updates.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's and 8+ years of relevant experience or Masters degree and 6+ years of relevant experience with at least 3+ year(s) of leadership experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience advising and counseling professional students in a research or university setting.
Knowledge of the residency application process for medical students.
Knowledge of the AAMC's Careers in Medicine program.
Special Instructions to the Applicants:
The anticipated salary range for this position is $89,076- $115,000. The final salary will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, and internal equity considerations.
