The Opportunity:
Are you passionate about laboratory safety and compliance? UCF is seeking a Safety Specialist I to support our Radiation Safety Program. This role involves conducting contamination surveys, managing radioactive waste, performing safety inspections, and supporting compliance with state and federal regulations. As the right hand to the Radiation Safety Officer, you’ll play a key role in maintaining safe research environments across our campuses.
The Safety Specialist I provides radiation and laser safety expertise to University clients while supporting the ongoing development, implementation, and risk assessment of the University's over-all radiation safety programs. This Specialist is responsible for the administration of radiation surveys, personnel training evaluations to prevent radiation exposure and contamination. The position maintains compliance through laboratory inspections, sampling/surveying of potentially contaminated areas, hazardous and radiation waste management, records management, and supports EHS team response to emergency calls and/or events.
Responsibilities:
Perform monthly contamination surveys to laboratories with radioactive materials. Run samples in the Liquid Scintillation Counter. Conduct sampling and leak test of General License Devices.
Perform compliance inspections and accomplish reports related to radiation and laser safety. Assist in conducting safety inspections to other research laboratories and satellite accumulation areas. Monitor and validate completion dates and corrective action. Oversee and maintain all safety posting and labeling under Radiation Safety Program.
Maintain inventories and database information relating to Radiation, Laser, X-ray Safety and other related program areas.
Perform classification, collection, transportation, storage, and documentation of radioactive waste; and of chemical and biological waste, if needed. Maintain waste storage facility and spill response equipment.
Perform survey/sampling activities for potentially contaminated areas. Assist in responding to investigation, and follow-up on accidents and incidents.
Maintain proper documentation of quarterly and annual employee dosages. Exchange quarterly dosimeter badges.
Monitor calibration and maintenance of radiation detection, instrumentation, and Liquid Scintillation Counter.
Assist in providing safety trainings and technical guidance to the University Community.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in Chemistry, Physics, or Environmental Health and Safety, or a related field.
2+ years of experience in environmental health and safety, preferably in a laboratory or academic setting.
Previous experience in radiation and laser safety.
OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and current DOT hazardous materials training.
Technical proficiency in using safety databases and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
