A Day in the Life of April Abreu, RN, Registered Nurse Specialist I for UCF’s Student Health Services
April Abreu, RN is a Registered Nurse Specialist I for UCF’s Student Health Services, where she provides essential nursing care to support student well-being. For more than seven years, she has worked as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) for UCF’s Student Health Services before she transitioned into her current role as Nurse Specialist I in March 2025.
What Does a Typical Day as a Registered Nurse Specialist I Look Like?
At the beginning of each shift, it’s important to complete all opening tasks. “I help prepare the office for the day, check upcoming appointments and help open sports medicine or the lab as needed.” Throughout the day, she performs routine responsibilities such as sterilizing clinical equipment, supporting ancillary clinics, and providing patient education. At the end of her shift, she ensures that all required documentation is completed, verifies that supplies are adequately stocked for the nursing staff, assist with patient triage for the late-night clinic, and upholds HIPAA compliance.
How Has UCF Supported Your Career Growth?
The University of Central Florida is committed to supporting employee growth and professional development. One of the biggest ways UCF invests in its employees is through a tuition reimbursement program, which covers up to two classes per semester. “Without the use of tuition reimbursement,” April says, “I honestly don’t think I could have obtained my education.” Now as an RN, UCF allowed her to transition from the LPN role to the RN role where she can use her skills to better serve the UCF community.
Be Your Own Hero!
Believing in herself was the key to chasing her dreams and overcoming obstacles. When asked who her hero is, April didn’t hesitate: “I am my own hero. I have worked so hard to accomplish my goals,” she said. After 22 years of service as a licensed practical nurse, achieving this major career milestone is a testament to her dedication, determination, and hard work.
What is Next in Her Career Growth Journey?
April Abreu, RN, is currently in the process of getting into UCF’s Master of Science in Nursing program as well as preparing for the infection prevention certification test. Her professional journey is far from over as she continues to pursue new milestones. Her success is testament to the power of self-belief and that by becoming your own hero, you can accomplish your dreams.
