The Opportunity:
Join the Chilled Water team at the University of Central Florida as a Centrifugal Chiller Technician III. This crucial role within Facilities and Business Operations focuses on operating and maintaining our Central Energy Plants, particularly the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system's absorption chiller. You'll be instrumental in maintaining and optimizing our chilled water systems to ensure a reliable and efficient campus environment.
This role involves providing advanced technical support, overseeing contractor work, and ensuring the smooth operation of chilled water equipment. You will also interpret system alarms in the absence of the Utilities Manager and oversee mechanical procedures and performance tests.
Responsibilities:
Oversee and perform preventive maintenance and daily operations of the Combined Heat and Power’s (CHP) absorption chiller to meet Chilled Water (CHW) district heat load requirements. Support major repairs and maintenance inspections, ensuring team members monitor and respond to system failures.
Conduct independent analysis on chilled water systems and associated sub-systems within the District Energy Plants (DEP). Develop, install, repair, and recalibrate system controllers and ancillary components. Perform calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of devices including relays, actuators, valves, and CHW meters.
Develop and implement changes to CHW systems for improved performance. Propose enhancements for CHW modernization projects, utilizing advanced analysis and historical performance data to develop solutions and Facilities Performance Indicators (FPIs).
Provide technical data and services to CHW areas and other university departments. Identify and resolve technical system issues, work with Automation contractors on system interfaces, and design technical solutions blending knowledge with business needs.
Prioritize and address complex CHW work orders and service requests. Create proactive work orders for DEP plant functionality, manage completion dates, and ensure prompt responses to life safety and urgent work orders.
Administer and develop UCF's Chilled Water Plant Specifications focusing on absorption chillers. Educate stakeholders, create tools, and introduce standards and specifications. Report on CHW upgrades and confirm compliance with project performance standards.
Collaborate with Campus AUX, DSO, and Athletic units to provide metrics and data for DEP plants. Serve as a technical resource, update Facilities Condition Assessment (FCA) data, and work with the Engineering department on FCA updates.
Provide guidance to entry-level staff, assist Engineers, Managers, and Superintendents with various tasks, and operate forklifts, highlifts, and other heavy equipment as needed. Perform welding requirements and other duties as assigned by management.
Respond to on-call and call-back situations as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 4+ years of relevant experience. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information
Preferred Qualifications:
8 years of experience overseeing and maintaining absorption and centrifugal chillers, with a focus on meeting Chilled Water (CHW) district heat load requirements.
Proven expertise in conducting independent analysis of chilled water systems and associated sub-systems, including developing, installing, repairing, and recalibrating system controllers and ancillary components.
Expert-level knowledge of centrifugal and absorption chillers, pumps, and control concepts.
Proficiency in interpreting technical manuals, blueprints, and system schematics.
Experience supervising and training a team, providing guidance to ensure effective performance.
Familiarity with work order and/or service request systems for tracking and managing maintenance tasks.
Skill in developing and processing metrics to monitor system performance and help guide improvements.
Strong problem-solving abilities with meticulous attention to detail.
Knowledge of national and state codes related to electrical and mechanical systems, as they relate to supporting Chiller Plants.
Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information effectively in English to various audiences, including team members, stakeholders, and university departments. Proven experience in clearly articulating issues, solutions, and technical details both verbally and in writing, ensuring smooth coordination and understanding across various levels of the organization.

UCF policy requires completion and passing of a physical exam for this position.
