UCF’s Center for Humanities and Digital Research (CHDR) is a collaborative research hub in the College of Arts and Humanities (CAH) connecting faculty researchers and graduate research associates with community partners and grant-making institutions through project planning, technical expertise, grant writing, and ultimately dissemination in conjunction with the scholarly and literary journals also housed in the college. The intellectual and technical resources of CAH come to bear in CHDR, where groundbreaking interdisciplinary digital research is fostered and shared through the academy and the surrounding communities of Central Florida and beyond.

The Opportunity

UCF's College of Arts and Humanities seeks candidates for an Applications Programmer I within the Center for Humanities and Digital Research (CHDR). The Applications Programmer I develops, implements, and maintains software applications that support the Center’s mission to advance interdisciplinary scholarship at the intersection of humanities and technology. The CHDR is a dynamic, collaborative environment involving faculty, staff, and students from Arts & Humanities and Engineering and Computer Science. This position works as part of a team to enable humanities faculty to realize their research vision with appropriate digital projects, including use of emerging technologies related to AI and advanced machine learning for large-scale research.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Design, develop, test, and implement software applications in line with faculty needs and objectives.

  • Implementation of user experience designs, database, and back-end support.

  • Develop and maintain web-based and client-server applications using modern frameworks.

  • Provide technical and end-user support for existing applications.

  • Ensure solutions are secure and compliant with industry standards, FERPA, accessibility requirements, and university policies.

  • Create and maintain technical documentation, design specifications, and user guidelines; assist in training users when needed.

  • Stay current with software, cloud, and AI/ML advancements.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree; or High School Diploma (or equivalent) and 4 years of relevant work experience in lieu of degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219(6).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, digital media, or related area.

  • Demonstrated experience with web application development (project, internship, or professional experience).

  • Demonstrated experience in digital humanities.

  • Ability to communicate with technical and non-technical constituents to coordinate the development and maintenance of a wide range of web applications.

  • Knowledge of and experience with programming languages, such as JavaScript, Python, PHP, HTML, and CSS.

  • Experience with database development, such as eXist-DB and MySQL.

  • Experience with OS/Systems and Other Software, including Linux, Windows, Git, Microsoft Office; and AI (use and coding).

  • Ability to work independently, completing tasks with a high level of attention to detail.

  • Ability to handle multiple, concurrent priorities and the pressure of deadlines.
