COS/Biology:
The Department of Biology is a broad-spectrum biology curriculum at the undergraduate level with courses running the spectrum from molecular and cell biology to mammalogy and ichthyology and field ecology courses.
At the graduate school level, we’ve focused on evolutionary biology and conservation biology through our MS in Biology and our Ph.D. in Integrative and Conservation Biology.
The Opportunity:
The Genomics Teaching Laboratory Coordinator I provides general technical services for the Biology Department. This requires interaction with the department Chair, faculty, Facilities Specialist, Safety Personnel, and students.
Responsibilities:
Maintain and update lab computers and software required for genomics analysis, such as bioinformatics software.
Assist students on proper instrument use, laboratory techniques, and safety protocols. Works closely with the department Chair and Facilities Specialist to comply with safety regulations and protocols within the laboratory. Follow EHS guidelines to maintain safe teaching and working environments.
Assist faculty in overseeing undergraduate and graduate students in various senior level genetics courses.
Ensure that all laboratory instruments and equipment are in proper working order to support ongoing research activities.
With guidance of the department Chair and the faculty, help implement quality control measures to maintain the integrity of experimental results and oversee the calibration of all instrumentation to ensure accuracy and precision in experimental procedures.
Oversee scheduling for heavily used instruments in the lab, such as qPCR machines.
Conduct inventory of lab supplies and reagents necessary for conducting genomics experiments.
Submit order and maintenance requests through the Facilities Specialist and department Chair.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree and 0+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information
Preferred Qualifications:
M.S. degree in a molecular biology related field.
Experience generating and analyzing genome-scale datasets.
Lab: genomic library prep, cDNA/RNAseq prep, TapeStation and qPCR quality control, running sequencers (Illumina/Nanopore, etc.).
Computational: proficiency in R, perl, and/or python, ability to run bioinformatic pipelines on High-Performance Compute Clusters.
